CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri baseball team (6-5) won its home-opening series against Central Arkansas (6-6) with a 6-2 win in Sunday's series finale. Southeast won the series opener on Friday.
In his third start of the season,
Robert Beltran (2-1) worked seven complete innings, allowing just one run on six hits. Beltran fanned seven Bears and walked only one.
Matthew Wade and
Brady Wright each pitched an inning in relief on Sunday. As a staff, the Redhawks combined to strikeout 10 Bear hitters.
UCA starter Hunter Neal (0-2) picked up the loss. Neal pitched only one and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs. In all, Central Arkansas used five pitchers in the contest.
The Redhawks pounced on the Bears early. Back-to-back doubles by
Branden Boggetto and
Garrett Gandolfo to lead off the second inning plated the first run of the day. The third double of the inning, this time by
Scott Mitchell, gave Southeast a 2-0 lead heading into the third inning.
With runners on second and third with two out in the third inning,
Dan Holst scored on a wild pitch. With bases loaded,
Hunter Leeper singled to right to plate Boggetto and extend the lead to 4-0 after three innings.
Southeast tacked on one more run in the fourth inning when
Chris Osborne scored on a sacrifice fly by Holst. Southeast led 5-0 going to the fifth.
Justin McCarty hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to break up Beltran's shutout.
Mitchell recorded his second RBI of the day in the seventh inning. Mitchell drove in Boggetto on a base hit to center field, extending the Redhawk lead to 6-1.
Matt Anderson blasted the Bears' second home run of the game in the top of the ninth inning, narrowing the Redhawk lead to 6-2.
The Redhawks put up 13 hits in Sunday's game.
Daniel Costello and Boggetto each had three hits in the game while Holst and Mitchell each had two hits. Boggetto scored three of the Redhawks' six runs.
The Bears tallied eight hits, led by Anderson's two-hit performance.
The Redhawks will embark on a seven-game road swing beginning this week at Ole Miss. The Redhawks and Rebels will play two games, the first of which will be played Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Game two will be Wednesday at 4 p.m.
