Redhawks Drop Series Finale to Murray State, 16-5

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Murray State (10-13, 1-2) collected an Ohio Valley Conference single-game high 20 hits in a 16-5 victory over Southeast Missouri (8-12, 2-1) Sunday afternoon at the Southeast Softball Complex.

Southeast won the series, 2-1, but surrendered 11 runs in the first inning alone during the finale.

In her first career start, Kelsey Ihns faced just four hitters before she exited the game. Shelbey Miller, Brenna Finck and Jessica Twaddle all singled to quickly load the bases for MSU. Cayla Levins then stepped in and launched a grand slam over the left field foul pole. Jocelynn Rodgers singled to center and later scored from third on a wild pitch before Miller singled home Leah Kesel.

The Racers continued to pour it on, capitalizing on a two-out error to plate five more runs in their big inning. Maddy Feeney scored on a throwing error by pitcher Madeline Krumrey and Miller stole home. A two-RBI double by Levins and RBI-double by Rodgers put MSU ahead, 11-0. The Racers sent 15 hitters to the plate and had 10 hits in the top of the first.

Southeast scored twice in both the first and second innings and once in the fourth.

Danielle Turner reached on a fielder's choice and Claire Wernig scored, and Sarah Messex drew a bases loaded walk that scored Haylee Krack in the bottom of the first.

Harli Wheeler singled home Riley Hayes and later came around to score when Turner hit into another fielder's choice in the bottom of the second inning.

Savannah Carpenter's two-out single plated Abby Tillotson in the fourth.

Mason Robinson (7-7) picked up the win, allowing five runs on six hits in four innings. Robinson also walked five and struck out one.

Ihns (0-1) suffered the loss. All four of the hitters she faced hit safely and scored.

Miller went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, a double and two RBI, while Levins went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, two doubles, two runs scored and six RBIs to lead MSU. Kesel went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, as well. Meanwhile, Finck and Rodgers added two hits each.
