Redhawks Sweep Murray State in Doubleheader, 4-3, 9-1

Southeast wins first series of the season during the opening weekend of OVC play

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Freshman Brittany Stevens went 4-for-7 with two runs scored, two doubles, a triple and three RBIs to lead Southeast Missouri (8-11, 2-0) to a 4-3, 9-1, doubleheader sweep of Murray State (9-13, 0-2) Saturday at the Southeast Softball Complex.

Southeast picked up its first series win of the season during the opening weekend of Ohio Valley Conference play. The Redhawks also improved to 16-9 in league-opening games and 19-6 in home-openers since moving to the NCAA Division I level in 1992.

A four-run second inning was enough for Southeast to get by MSU in game one.

The Redhawks strung together six-straight hits to start the inning. Stevens singled to right and went to third on an ensuing double by Savannah Carpenter. Sarah Messex followed with a single and Stevens scored. Darby Pruett's infield single drove in both Carpenter and Messex. After Riley Hayes moved Pruett into scoring position on a hit to left, Claire Wernig brought home Pruett on a single to give Southeast a 4-0 advantage.

MSU capitalized on three two-out Southeast errors to push across a pair of runs in the top of the third.

Two errors by second baseman Harli Wheeler and one by catcher Riley Hayes helped Shelbey Miller and Maddy Feeney come around to score, slicing the Redhawks lead to 4-2.

Another two-out error led to a third unearned run for the Racers in the top of the seventh.

Brenna Finck reached on the mishap and went to second when Mallory Young hit into a fielder's choice. Pinch-hitter Taylor Odom and Waddle each walked after that and Finck scored. With the bases loaded, Madeline Krumrey then struck out Jocelynn Rodgers to end the game.

Krumrey moved to 4-3 this season, allowing three runs (all unearned) on four hits. She also struck out five and walked three en route to her second complete game victory.

Mason Robinson (6-7) suffered the loss. Robinson struck out four, gave up four runs, walked one and scattered 10 hits.

Stevens and Carpenter each had two hits, a double and one run scored to lead Southeast. Hayes added two hits, as well.

Defensively, the Redhawks committed a season-high six errors.

Southeast scored in each of its last four innings to beat the Racers in six innings during the nightcap.

The Redhawks fell behind, 1-0, in the top of the second inning after Cayla Levins hit a solo home run to straightaway center.

Southeast grabbed the lead on a two-run home run by Haylee Krack with two outs in the bottom of the third. Krack hit her team-high fifth home run of the season to give the Redhawks a 2-1 lead.

The Redhawks tacked on another run in the fourth before blowing the game open with four runs on six two-out hits in the fifth inning.

Danielle Turner doubled down the left field line and scored when Carpenter greeted MSU reliever J.J. Francis with a double. Messex and Pruett followed with infield singles and Hayes singled down the left field line as Southeast pulled ahead, 7-1.

One final two-out rally in the sixth inning put the Racers away for good.

Krack and Turner both walked and Stevens delivered a two-RBI triple to center field, polishing off the 9-1 victory.

Haley Thogmartin (4-5) allowed six hits and just one run, while striking out three in six innings. Thogmartin did not allow a walk and pitched the second complete game of her career.

Haven Campbell (3-4) was credited with the loss. Campbell allowed five runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings. She struck out two and walked none.

The Redhawks 15 hits in game two marked a new season-high. Southeast put up 10 or more hits in four of its last six contests.

Turner and Carpenter each went 3-for-3 and combined for three runs. Stevens, Messex and Pruett followed with two hits apiece. Additionally, Krack (2), Stevens (3) and Pruett (2) accounted for seven RBIs.

Southeast won its second series against MSU and first since 2011.

The Redhawks and Racers meet one more time at 1 p.m., CT, Sunday.
