HAMMOND, La. - Defending Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana (14-12) swept Southeast Missouri (6-11) in a doubleheader Wednesday. The Lady Lions won by scores of 7-1 and 4-3.
Caitlyn VanHemelryck allowed just one run on four hits in a complete game victory during game one.
Southeast, which left seven runners on base, had three singles and a triple for its four hits.
SLU scored in six innings and pushed across three unearned runs with the help of two Redhawk errors in the bottom of the fourth.
Carlie Whittington was hit by a pitch and later came around to score on a throwing error by shortstop
Sarah Messex. Jacquelyn Ramon then touched home on a fielding error by second baseman
Harli Wheeler. Kinsey Nichols sacrifice fly plated the other run to give the Lady Lions a 5-1 advantage.
Ramon singled home a run for SLU in the fifth and the Lady Lions scored their fifth unearned tally thanks to another Southeast error in the sixth.
The Redhawks scored their only run on a sacrifice fly by
Darby Pruett in the top of the second inning. Pruett knocked in
Brittany Stevens who tripled in the previous at-bat.
VanHemelryck ran her record to 2-1 this season, while
Madeline Krumrey (3-2) was credited with the loss for Southeast. Krumrey allowed eight hits, six runs and three walks in five innings.
The Redhawks four errors matched a season-high.
Nichols, Ramon and Amber Sather each posted two hits to lead the Lady Lions. Whittington accounted for three runs scored, as well.
SLU registered a total of nine hits in game one.
Abby Tillotson's three-run home run gave Southeast a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning during the nightcap.Tillotson drove Kasey Nielson's 3-2 offering over the left field wall for her first career home run.
The Lady Lions, however, came back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mychal Truxillo scored the tying run on a passed ball with two outs in the inning.
After Southeast was retired in order during its at-bat in the seventh, SLU had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom half of the inning when Sather drove home Katie Lacour on a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Lady Lions a 4-3 walk-off win. Lacour reached on an infield single and stole two bases before scoring the winning run.
Taylor Bishop (8-7) picked up the win, striking out six, walking one and allowing just two hits in 4.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Krumrey (3-3) suffered the loss after scattering two runs on three hits in 1.1 relief innings. She also struck out one and walked three.
Lacour finished with two hits, two runs scored and four stolen bases to lead SLU. The Lady Lions had six stolen bases in game two alone.
Claire Wernig went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead Southeast.
The Redhawks return home to open Ohio Valley Conference play with a three-game series against Murray State this weekend. Southeast and MSU play a 1 p.m., CT, doubleheader Saturday before wrapping up the series with a 1 p.m. single game Sunday.
