JACKSON, Miss. - Southeast Missouri (6-9) started its spring break by pounding out 25 hits and belting five home runs in a 10-1, 9-8, doubleheader sweep of Southwestern Athletic Conference member Jackson State (2-11) Tuesday.
Southeast's four home runs in game one were a season-high as the Redhawks posted double-digit hits in back-to-back games for the first time this year.
Ahead, 4-0, Southeast erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Haylee Krack and
Darby Pruett hit back-to-back home runs with two outs. Krack's grand slam marked her team-high fourth homer of the season and Pruett's solo shot was her second this year.
Claire Wernig drove in
Harli Wheeler on a single for Southeast's other run, as the Redhawks widened their lead to 9-1.
Mackenzie Long singled and came around to score one more run for Southeast to polish off the 10-1 win in the fifth.
Madeline Krumrey improved to 3-1 after giving up six hits and one run in four innings. Krumrey also struck out two and walked two.
Sybil Lozano (1-3) suffered the loss. Lozano allowed nine runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings.
Wheeler went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored. She was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Wernig followed with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, while
Savannah Carpenter and
Danielle Turner also hit home runs.
Southeast finished with 12 hits in its five-inning victory.
Tied, 6-6, after four innings in the nightcap, the Redhawks plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull away.
Southeast loaded the bases with one out before
Nicole Deering scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.
Sarah Messex followed with a RBI-double to center and
Riley Hayes delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Redhawks a 9-6 advantage.
JSU pulled to within a run with the help of back-to-back RBI hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Tigers, however, left a runner in scoring position when Krumrey struck out Ashley Neal to end the frame.
Krumrey then struck out
Chelsea Smith and forced Denisha Knight to hit into a double play en route to picking up her first save.
Haley Thogmartin (3-5) was credited with the win, working 2.2 innings in relief.
Merina Young (1-4) took the loss, giving up nine runs on seven hits. Young also had two strikeouts and walked three.
Wernig, Turner,
Brittany Stevens and Messex each posted multiple hits. Turner went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, a home run and two RBIs, while Stevens, Messex and Wernig followed with two hits.
Southeast registered 13 hits in game two.
The Redhawks, who swept a doubleheader for the first time this season, return to action at Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday.
