Redhawks Take the Series with 9-2 Win over UAPB

PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Southeast Missouri baseball (3-3) defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-6) Saturday afternoon by a score of 9-2.

Clay Chandler (1-0) earned his first win in a Redhawk uniform Saturday. He pitched six complete innings, allowed one unearned run on five hits, and struck out three. Chandler was perfect the first time through the order before surrendering the Golden Lions' first hit to start the fourth.

"Clay was solid once again giving us six good innings," Steve Bieser said on his starter. "He started to labor a little in the sixth so we went to the bullpen in the seventh and they did just what I asked them to do. Come in, throw strikes and let the defense play."

Humberto Medina (0-1) picked up the loss. Medina pitched seven innings, allowed seven runs, and struck out eight Redhawks.

The Redhawks' nine runs came on 11 hits and three Golden Lion Errors. The Redhawks dispersed the offense as eight Redhawks all had hits Saturday.

Southeast broke the game wide open in the third inning with five runs in the frame. A leadoff walk to Hunter Leeper followed by a hit up the middle by Brian Lees started the inning off for Southeast. An error by the first basemen allowed Trevor Ezell to reach and load the bases. Branden Boggetto ripped a base hit through the left side to score Leeper and Lees. A bad throw back to the pitcher got away and allowed Ezell to score. Back-to-back walks to Dan Holst and Kylar Robertson reloaded the bases with two out. Daniel Costello stepped in and drove a base hit to left to score two more runs and extend the lead to 5-0.

"I felt the key to today's game was the two tough at bats that Kylar and Daniel (Costello) took in the fifth inning with two outs," Bieser said. "Both guys fell down in the count 0-2, Robertson worked a walk and Costello punched a ball into left to plate two more runs. It looked we were going to settle for three runs in that inning but we were able to put up a five-spot instead."

A sacrifice fly by Costello in the fifth inning scored Garrett Gandolfo to widen the lead to 6-0.

The Golden Lions scored their first run of the weekend in the bottom of the inning on an error by Leeper, cutting the Redhawks lead to 6-1 after five innings.

Southeast capitalized on a one-out walk to Costello in the seventh inning. Leeper knocked a double to drive in Costello and bring the lead back to six, 7-1.

Jake Busiek took the mound in relief in the seventh inning. Roberto Colon drilled a two-out double to left center, UAPB's first extra-base hit of the weekend. Colon came around to score on a base hit up the middle by Jaqueese Moore, 7-2 Redhawks after seven.

The Redhawks added a couple more runs in the top of the ninth inning. Costello picked up his fourth RBI on a single to right center to score Holst. A two-out single to left by Ezell plated Costello, broadening the lead to 9-2 on the Golden Lions.

Ezell, Costello, and Lees all registered two hits in the game. Costello was a driving force for the offense with 4 runs batted in while Boggetto drove in two on Saturday.

The Redhawks will look for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Golden Lions. Robert Beltran (0-1) will get the starting nod for the Redhawks on the mound.
