Bieser Notches 100th Career Win with 17-4 Victory Over Alcorn

Lorman, Miss. – Head baseball coach Steve Bieser earned his 100th career victory Monday afternoon with a 17-4 victory over Alcorn State (1-3).

"To me, 100 is just a number," Bieser said. "At this point I am more concerned with this club and finding ways to get better each day."

The win is the Redhawks' first of the young 2016 season as they are now 1-3.

The Redhawks' 17 runs came on 16 hits against Alcorn. Designated hitter Kylar Robertson had a huge day at the plate. Robertson finished with three hits, falling a home run short of hitting for the cycle, and drove in five runs.

Bieser added, "In the Lamar series, we found some things that we needed to readdress and focus on improving. The team did a good job of focusing on the areas we struggled with against Alcorn today. Now we need to have a couple good practices and carry that into next weekend against Pine Bluff."

In his collegiate debut, Redhawk starter Daniel Bergtholdt (1-0) pitched three innings. Bergtholdt allowed two runs on three hits, and struck out two. Southeast was able to see seven other pitchers in the game.

Southeast put up a four spot in the opening frame. Back-to-back singles to lead off the game by Trevor Ezell and Branden Boggetto followed by a walk to Garrett Gandolfo loaded the bases. Ryan Rippee lined a base hit to left to score Ezell and Boggetto. Following a sacrifice bunt by Dan Holst, Robertson doubled to left to plate Gandolfo and Rippee to make it 4-0 after the top of the first.

The Redhawks broke the game wide open in the second inning with six runs. Ezell reached on a one-out base hit then scored from first on a double to left by Boggetto. After a walk to Gandolfo, an error by the left fielder allowed Rippee to score, Gandolfo to advance to third, and Boggetto to score. A walk to Holst loaded the bases for Robertson. Robertson singled in Gandolfo to make it 7-0. Scott Mitchell stepped in a drilled a double to right field to clear the bases and extend the lead to 10-0. The bases-clearing double was enough to knock Alcorn starter Nick Brooks out of the game after only retiring four hitters.

Alcorn touched home with a pair of runs off Bergtholdt in the bottom of the second inning, 10-2 Redhawks.

Southeast had another big inning in the sixth. Gandolfo led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Following a one-out walk to Holst, Robertson tripled to score both runners and widen the lead back to 10, 12-2. Brian Lees drove in Robertson with a double to down the left field line. Lees was plated on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hunter Leeper to bring the score to 14-2.

The Braves plated a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning and again in the seventh to cut the lead to 14-4.

With two out and runners on second and third, Ezell broke up a double play to reach and allow Lees to touch home. Daniel Costello hit a base hit to score Ezell from third. An error by the leftfielder allowed Costello to advance to second and Boggetto to reach third. A throwing error on a failed caught stealing allowed Boggetto to trot home and extend the lead to 17-4.

Ezell, Boggetto, Costello, and Rippee all had a pair of hits Monday. Rippee and Mitchell each had three RBI in the contest. Seven total Redhawks scored multiple runs.

Southeast totaled six doubles in the game.

A trio of student-athlete made their Redhawk debuts Monday including Garret Reynolds, Jared Waldhoff, and Bergtholdt.

The Redhawks are back in action for a weekend series at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The series will begin Friday, Feb. 26, at 2:05 p.m.
