MURRAY, Ky. - Gee McGhee scored a game-high 23 points off the bench and Jeffery Moss added 20 to lead Murray State (14-12, 9-5) to an 83-56 win over Southeast Missouri (5-21, 2-11) Saturday night at the CFSB Center.
MSU shot 57.1 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from 3-point range en route to its second-straight victory.
The Racers buried 11 three-pointers en route to building a comfortable 48-25 halftime lead.
Â
MSU was red-hot, draining nine of its first 11 three-point attempts. Moss, who scored 26 points during the first meeting between these teams in Cape Girardeau on Feb. 4, knocked down each of his first three 3-pointers.
Â
Moss ended up with five first-half treys and Justin Seymour buried three to lead the Racers, who shot 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from beyond the arc in the opening stanza.Â
Â
Southeast, which hit just 31 percent (9-of-29) from the field in the first half, led by no more than two points on three occasions in the first two minutes. Jumpers by
Antonius Cleveland and
Joel Angus III, and a 3-pointer by
Jamaal Calvin gave the Redhawks their only leads of the game.
The Redhawks played better in the second half and managed to cut MSU's lead to 16 when freshman
Tony Anderson made a 3-pointer to make it 54-38 with 14:27 remaining. Anderson's trifecta capped an 8-0 run at the time.
That, however, was as close as Southeast would get.
McGhee shot 9-of-11 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range, while Moss made 7-of-11 field goals and 6-of-10 treys. Wayne Langston followed with 11 points and eight rebounds, Seymour scored 11 and Bryce Jones added 10.
MSU was 32-of-56 on the night and 14-of-24 from long range.
Angus led all Southeast scorers with 17 points as one of four double-digit scorers for the Redhawks. Anderson pitched in 12 points and six rebounds, Cleveland had 11 points and seven boards and
Eric McGill dropped in 10.
"We're offensively challenged and in order for us to be good, we have to improve our defensive status," said Southeast head coach
Rick Ray. "We are not going to beat anybody who scores 83 points and shoots 57 percent."
The Redhawks were without starting forward
Trey Kellum who was sidelined due to a concussion.
Southeast returns to Cape Girardeau to host SIU Edwardsville on Feb. 18. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., CT, at the Show Me Center.
