Southeast Missouri volleyball closes the weekend by taking on Jacksonville State on Sunday at the Pete Mathews Coliseum in Jacksonville, Ala. The match is schedule for a 2 p.m. first serve.
Scouting the Gamecocks
JSU enters the match after winning their previous two contests over Tennessee Tech and last year's Ohio Valley Conference champion, Belmont. Allyson Zuhlke leads the Gamecocks in kills with 277, averaging 3.34 per set.
Last Time Out - UT Martin
In a five set contest, the Redhawks come back effort fell short against he Skyhawks. Both
Krissa Gearring and
Nzingha Clarke were able to enter the next century mark in career kills during the contest. Gearring's 17 kills pushed her over the 800 kill mark while Clarke's 16 allowed her to eclipse 600 kills for her career.
Katarina Rotta served up 51 assists in the affair while adding 12 digs to earn her second double-double of the season.
Last Weekend
Southeast went 1-1 on the weekend; sweeping Eastern Illinois Friday before falling in five sets to conference leader SIUE on Saturday. The Redhawks victory over EIU marks their first conference victory of the season.
Rotta Earns OVC Honor
Rotta was named OVC Setter of the Week for the first time this season and second time in her career. She opened last weekend by tallying 41 assists (13.67 per set) against Eastern Illinois while adding nine digs and two kills. She followed by dishing out another 58 assists vs. SIUE, registering a career-best six kills (.375 attack percentage) while earning seven digs and a solo block during the match. As a whole, the Redhawks offense sported a .235 hitting clip.
Numbers at a Glance
Gearring currently ranks eighth in the nation in total kills (318) and 21st in kills per set (4.42). Both marks lead the OVC.
At the beginning of the week, Clarke's hitting percentage of .295 ranked sixth in the OVC.
Jade Mortimer ranks 54th in the country in digs per set at 4.71. Her season total of 339 ranks 22nd in the nation. Both currently rank first in the conference.
Streak Snapped
After knocking off EIU last Friday, the Redhawks snapped the longest losing streak in school history. Previously, the longest losing streak during Southeast's NCAA DI era was 11 (2003-04). SEMO fell in their final three games of 2003 before opening the 2004 season with eight straight loses.
Looking Ahead
Southeast will return home next weekend to host Belmont and Tennessee State. Friday's match, Oct. 14, against the Bruins is the annual Houck "Filled" House event and is schedule for 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's contest against the Tigers is slated for 2 p.m.
