Redhawks Take Down Morehead State, 3-1

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. ­– Southeast Missouri women's soccer (8-6-4, 2-4-3) snapped a seven-match winless streak Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Morehead State (6-11-2, 3-6-1) at Houck Stadium.
 
Southeast's three goals are a season-best in conference play this season. It's the Redhawks' first victory since Ohio Valley Conference play began on Sept. 23.
 
The Redhawks put up a season-high 27 shots, putting 12 on goal. Southeast also had a season-best 10 corner kick opportunities.
 
SEMO earned goals from Esmeralda Gonzales, Angie Mann, and Natasha Minor. The thee combined for 15 of Southeast's 27 shots; putting eight combined shots on goal. Lauren Kaempfe and Maggie Pike each had three shots in the match. For Pike, her three shots were a career-high.  
 
Minor led the squad with eight shots (tied career high), putting four on goal. Minor is closing in on a few of Southeast's career records. She needs two shots attempted to break the record of 185, four shots on goal to break the record of 100, three goals to break the record of 29, and four points to break the record of 71.
 
Kindra Lierz (8-6-4) picked up the victory in goal. Lierz allowed Morehead's lone goal and made a pair of saves. She now has 27 career wins.
 
Eva Yr Helgadottir (3-8) gave up all three goals to the Redhawks but made nine saves in the loss.
 
Gonzales buried her fourth goal of the season in the 31st minute to put the Redhawks on the board. Gonzales picked up a deflection off an Eagle defender in the box and fired past the Helgadottir to put SEMO up 1-0.
 
The Redhawks extended the lead in the 42nd minute on Mann's second goal of the season. Mann cocked and fire in the box near the left post and into the back of the net, putting the Redhawks up 2-0 near the end of the half.
 
The Redhawks led in the shot column at halftime, 11-2. Gonzales led the team with three shots and two shots on goal.
 
Morehead State wasted no time scoring to begin the second half. Ashley Ritchie scored her eighth goal of the season one minute and 25 seconds into the second half. Cara Maher assisted on Ritchie's goal to cut the Redhawk lead to one, 2-1.
 
The Redhawks were relentless in the second half still managing to hold possession most of the half and firing off 16 shots.
 
Minor scored an insurance goal in the 89th minute to put the Redhawks up 3-1. Paige Blankenheim crossed her corner kick into the box. All it took was a one-touch from Minor from the middle of the box to score her 11th goal of the season.
 
Southeast held the Eagles to just five shots in the match. Ritchie led the Eagles with three of their five shots, putting all three on goal.
 
Southeast Missouri will bring the 2016 season to a close on Thursday against UT Martin. The season finale will be played at Houck Stadium at 7 p.m. Prior to Thursday's match, the Redhawks will honor three seniors: Kaitlin Kuznacic, Mann, and Minor.
