Southeast Missouri volleyball hits the road to take on Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State this weekend. Friday's match against EKU is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., CT, while Saturday at MSU is set for 2 p.m., CT.
Scouting the Colonels
EKU enters Friday night's contest after splitting competition last weekend. The Colonels defeated Eastern Illinois in five sets before being swept at SIUE. Celina Sanks leads the team with 225 kills, averaging 2.96 a set. They are led defensively by Mallory Maxwell who has totaled 357 digs (4.70 per set, ranks second in OVC). Last year, the Redhawks defeated the Colonels, 3-1.
Scouting the Eagles
MSU enters the weekend coming off a 3-2 victory over EIU. The night before, the Eagles took SIUE to the limit, but fell in five games. Meredith Jewell leads the offense with 289 kills (3.36 per set) followed by Sydney Schuler with 241 (2.84 per set). Southeast has won the previous two meetings over MSU.
Last Week Recap
Krissa Gearring was named the adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week. She had a successful weekend registering 43 kills over nine sets (4.78 per set) while tacking on 29 digs (3.22 per set). Her effort helped Southeast go 2-0 on the weekend; knocking off both Tennessee State and last year's OVC champion, Belmont. Southeast improved its OVC record to 3-5 and is tied for seventh in the division.
Numbers at a Glance
Gearring currently ranks ninth in the nation in total kills (371) and 17th in kills per set (4.42). Both marks lead the OVC.
Nzingha Clarke's hitting percentage of .279 ranksninth in the OVC.
Jade Mortimer ranks 69th in the country in digs per set at 4.64 (3rd in OVC). Her OVC-leading season total of 390 digs ranks 34th in the nation.
Looking Ahead
Southeast will return home to host Murray State and Austin Peay for the Oct. 28-29 weekend. Friday's match against the Racers is slated for 6:30 p.m. and will be the annual "Survivor Night" in honor of breast cancer awareness month.
