Redhawks Suffer Overtime Heartbreaker to EKU, 2-1

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's soccer (7-6-4, 1-4-3) suffered a tough 2-1 loss in overtime to Eastern Kentucky (10-4, 5-2) on Sunday at Houck Stadium.
 
The Redhawks scored in the fifth minute on Lauren Kaempfe's second goal of the season and carried a 1-0 lead for 80 minutes. EKU scored the equalizer in the 86th minute to send the match into overtime. The Colonels scored the golden goal in the 97th minute to secure the 2-1 win over Southeast.
 
The Redhawks outshot the Colonels 17-8 in the match; however, SEMO only put nine shots on goal while EKU was more efficient, putting six of eight shots on goal.
 
Kindra Lierz (7-6-4) suffered the loss in goal for Southeast. Lierz made four stops for the Redhawks but gave up two goals.
 
Anna Hall (10-4) earned the victory. Hall made seven saves while EKU also recorded a team save.
 
Kaempfe netted her second goal of the season in the fifth minute. Shay Darga set Kaempfe up who headed the ball over Hall into the center of the net.
 
Southeast rattled off nine unanswered shots before EKU was able to get its first in the 29th minute.
 
The Redhawks led in shots 10-1 at halftime to accompany it's 1-0 lead in the match. SEMO had four corner kick opportunities in the first half.
 
EKU's Erin Torrence netted the equalizer in the 86th minute, tying the match at 1-1. Torrence headed the ball in off a corner kick by Logan Harvey.
 
Each team had six shots in the second half.
 
Angie Mann had the Redhawks' best opportunity to win the match in the 92nd minute with a header shot off a corner kick by Paige Blankenheim. The shot was well placed on the left post but EKU had a defender in goal to clear the shot away and keep the game alive.
 
Jordan Foster cocked and fired from about 15 yards out past Lierz to net the game-winner and secure the 2-1 victory for the Colonels.
 
Esmeralda Gonzales led the Redhawks with five shots, putting a pair on goal. Minor had three shots in the match.
 
The Redhawks had seven corner kicks while EKU had five. The Redhawks were called for 12 fouls while EKU was called on nine.
 
The Redhawks will look to get back in the win column next Sunday at Houck Stadium against Morehead State at 2 p.m.
