Southeast Missouri volleyball takes on conference opponents Belmont and Tennessee State this weekend at Houck Field House. Friday's match against the Bruins will be the annual Houck "Filled" House event and is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. This year's special edition t-shirts will be available when doors open at 5:30 p.m. and will be given tot he first 1,000 fans in attendance. Saturday's match is schedule for 2 p.m. first serve.
Scouting the Bruins
Belmont enters the match after splitting last weekend, earning a victory at Eastern Kentucky after falling at Morehead State. The Bruins are led offensively by Arianna Person who has tallied 221 kills (3.75 per set) on the season sparked by two-time 2016 adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Setter of the Week Emma Price (584 assists). As a team, the Bruins currently lead the OVC in both service aces (131) and aces per set (2.22).
Scouting the Tigers
Tennessee State enters the weekend after earning a midweek victory over Alabama A&M after knocking off Morehead State and falling to Eastern Kentucky during the weekend. Chloe Watson leads the team with 260 kills (3.25 per set). The Tigers also are led by last week's adidas® OVC Newcomer of the Week Payten Clark. She recorded 24 kills, 10 digs and 15 blocks over TSU's three matches. The Tigers will take on UT Martin before heading to Cape Girardeau, Mo. for Saturday's match.
Last Week
During midweek action, the Redhawks fell in a five-set contest against UT Martin as a late comeback fell short. SEMO closed out the week falling to Jacksonville State on Sunday.
Numbers at a Glance
Krissa Gearring currently ranks 10th in the nation in total kills (328) and 25th in kills per set (4.37). Both marks lead the OVC.
At the beginning of the week,
Nzingha Clarke's hitting percentage of .291 ranked seventh in the OVC.
Jade Mortimer ranks 62nd in the country in digs per set at 4.67 (3rd in OVC). Her season total of 350 ranks 30th in the nation.
Previous Awards
Katarina Rotta was named OVC Setter of the Week for the first time this season and second time in her career two weekends ago for her performances against Eastern Illinois and SIUE. She opened last weekend by tallying 41 assists (13.67 per set) against EIU while adding nine digs and two kills. She followed by dishing out another 58 assists vs. SIUE, registering a career-best six kills (.375 attack percentage) while earning seven digs and a solo block during the match. As a whole, the Redhawks offense sported a .235 hitting clip.
Streak Snapped
After knocking off EIU earlier in the year, the Redhawks snapped the longest losing streak in school history. Previously, the longest losing streak during Southeast's NCAA DI era was 11 (2003-04). SEMO fell in their final three games of 2003 before opening the 2004 season with eight straight loses.
Looking Ahead
Southeast hits the road next weekend to take on Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State. The Redhawks will battle the Colonels in Richmond, Ky. at 6 p.m. before heading to Morehead, Ky. to close the weekend against the Eagles at 4 p.m.
