East Division ScheduleSoutheast closes out the East Division side of its Ohio Valley Conference schedule at Tennessee Tech Saturday. The Redhawks are 0-5 against the OVC East this season and lost their last six meetings with East Division foes. TTU was the last OVC East Division squad that Southeast beat in 2014-15 (65-61 on Jan. 17 in Cape Girardeau).
Series HistoryThe Redhawks hook up with Tennessee Tech for the 44th time Saturday. TTU holds a 28-15 lead in the all-time series between these teams. Southeast has a three-game winning streak in the series after beating the Golden Eagles, 74-62, in 2012-13, 83-74, in 2013-14 and, 65-61, in 2014-15. The Redhawks are 3-17 all-time in Cookeville with their last win at the Eblen Center coming on Jan. 18, 2014 (83-74).
Cleveland Out for SaturdayAntonius Cleveland, Southeast's top scorer and rebounder this season, is out for Saturday's game against Tennessee Tech. Cleveland will miss his second-straight contest with an injured right wrist.
First MissAntonius Cleveland missed the first game of his Southeast career when his wrist injury sidelined him against Jacksonville State (Jan. 13). Cleveland played in 78 consecutive games before the Redhawks recent meeting with the Gamecocks.
Last Time OutSoutheast was again short-handed, playing this time with eight players in a 74-60 home loss to Jacksonville State Wednesday. The Redhawks were without
Antonius Cleveland for the first time this year after he injured his right wrist. It was a tale of two halves for Southeast, which played much better in the final 20 minutes. However, it wasn't enough to overcome a slow start. Offensively, the Redhawks shot just 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from the field and scored 23 points in the first half. Southeast held a one-point edge twice in the first 7:38 of the game, but did not get ahead of JSU again after that. The Redhawks did manage to edge the Gamecocks, 37-36, in the second stanza.
100 in ReachIsiah Jones is just two 3-pointers away from reaching 100 in his career. Jones is currently 98-of-264 from 3-point range in his two-year Southeast career. He made two or more treys in eight of his last 10 starts. Jones cleared 100 career assists when dished out three at Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 9).
Gullett Cracks Starting FiveWalk-on freshman
Kyle Gullett made his first career start against Jacksonville State (Jan. 13). A native of Paintsville, Kentucky, Gullett was part of the seventh different lineup combination Southeast used in 17 games this season. He scored three points and had two rebounds in a season-high 31 minutes. Gullett came off the bench in 14 contests before that.
Feeling ConfidentFreshman forward
Tony Anderson continues to play with confidence and it has shown in the last three games where he has improved in each of those contests. After coming off the bench to score 10 points at Morehead State (Jan. 7) and 11 points at Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 9), Anderson dropped in a season-high 17 in 22 minutes during his latest effort vs. Jacksonville State (Jan. 19). He shot 57.8 percent (11-of-19) from the field and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) at the free throw line during that span. Anderson also grabbed 17 rebounds, had one assist and collected two steals in his three double-digit scoring games combined.
Second Half EdgeThe Redhawks won a second half for the second time this season when it led Jacksonville State, 37-36, on Jan. 13. Southeast made 51.9 percent (14-of-27) of its field goals in the final 20 minutes after going 7-of-22 from the floor (31.8 percent) in the first half.
Quick BreakAfter Saturday's game at Tennessee Tech, Southeast will step out of Ohio Valley Conference play to host NAIA Hannibal-LaGrange Tuesday. The Redhawks will then begin inner-divisional play at home when they welcome UT Martin on Jan. 23. Southeast plays UTM, Eastern Illinois, Murray State, Austin Peay and SIU Edwardsville twice in its division to complete the rest of its league schedule.
Keeping up with JonesIsiah Jones led Southeast in scoring twice in his last three starts. Jones scored 15 points at Morehead State (Jan. 7) and 19 at Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 9). He also made six 3-pointers, knocked down 9-of-11 free throws, dished out 14 assists and collected four steals in that span. Jones ranks second on the team with 10.9 points per game and leads the Redhawks in assists (52) and steals (27) through 17 games. He is also Southeast's top scorer in conference play with 13.6 points a game.
