CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (3-6) crosses the Mississippi River to face rival Southern Illinois (6-3) Tuesday. Start time is 6 p.m., CT, at Davies Gymnasium.
Southeast enters the week after dropping two of three matches at the Arkansas Tournament. The Redhawks fell to host Arkansas and UT Arlington before bouncing back to beat Northwestern State, 3-1. Southeast plays its seventh-straight match away from Cape Girardeau.
Sophomore outside hitter
Krissa Gearring leads the Redhawks with 101 kills, averaging 3.16 per set in nine starts.
Nzingha Clarke follows with 88 kills and a team-high .303 attack percentage. Gearring ranks fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference in kills and Clarke is fifth in hitting percentage.
Jade Mortimer, who was named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 7, leads Southeast and stands second in the league with 142 digs (4.44 digs per set avg.).
Julie Yankus returns to SIU, where she spent five years as an associate head coach before taking over the Southeast helm. Yankus faces her former team for the fourth time. She is 1-2 against the Salukis, with all of those matches going five sets. Southeast lost, 2-3, in Carbondale during the 2012 season and, 2-3, in Cape Girardeau during the 2014 campaign. The Redhawks edged SIU by a score of 3-2 at the Kansas State Invitational in 2013.
SIU leads the all-time series by a count of 17-9. The Salukis have taken five of the last six matches between these teams.
