CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri baseball fell to Austin Peay Friday evening in game one of the series, 5-1.
Southeast falls to 17-12 on the season while Austin Peay is 16-10. Both teams are 9-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
Despite dropping the game, Southeast outhit the Govs 6-5 and each team had an error in the game.
Southeast has not lost back-to-back games since they were swept by Illinois State, Feb. 20-22.
With runners on second and third and two out, a wild pitch by Joey Lucchesi allowed Austin Peay to score and get on the board in the first inning, 1-0.
A two-run home run by Logan Gray in the third inning extended the Governor lead to 3-0.
A two-out double by Ridge Smith in the fifth plated a run for the Govs. With runners on first and third, a delayed steal plated another run, widening the lead to 5-0.
The Redhawks scored their lone run in the eighth inning when Clayton Evans scored on a base hit by Jason Blum to bring the score to 5-1.
Trevor Ezell was the only hitter for both teams who had a multi-hit game. He went 2-for-4 in the game.
Lucchesi (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season Friday evening. He pitched six innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits. He struck out four and walked five. Jacob Lawrence pitched three innings of scoreless, hitless baseball. He struck out three and walked one.
Alex Robles (2-2) earned the win for the Govs. He pitched seven innings, allowing one run on six hits. He struck out seven Redhawks hitters. Levi Primasing earned the save after entering the game in the eighth inning with the tying run on deck.
Game two of the series will be Saturday. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. Southeast Missouri will be hosting International Day as well as an Easter egg hunt. The hunt will begin 15 minutes prior to first pitch and is open to kids 10 and under.
