CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (2-10) notched a season-high in points and put six players in double figures to key a 94-84 win over Harris-Stowe (6-6) Sunday afternoon at the Show Me Center.
Â
Southeast won its second game in a row and shot a season-best 52.2 percent from the field during its final tune-up before Ohio Valley Conference play.
The Redhawks overcame a slow start and erased a 16-point deficit to get head coach
Rick Ray his first home victory.
"I was disappointed in our approach," said Ray. "We had a bad start because of our approach and then didn't defend in the last 8-10 minutes. We have to make sure we have the right approach to basketball and respect our opponent."
The Hornets, an NAIA member out of the America Midwest Conference, opened the game with a 20-4 run in the first 6:34. HSU made four of its first five field goals with six different players scoring to ignite the early surge.
After Dominic Phillips' jumper gave HSU a 26-13 advantage, Southeast bounced back with a 16-2 run to take its first lead.
Antonius Cleveland scored four-straight points before
Eric McGill threw down a dunk following Cleveland's steal. Shortly after
Isiah Jones made a free throw,
Jamaal Calvin came off the bench to score five points in a row.
Jones' layup then put the Redhawks ahead, 29-28, with 4:30 left to play in the first half.
HSU took one more lead on a Fletcher dunk, but Southeast scored nine of the last 12 points to build a four-point cushion (40-36) at the intermission.
The Redhawks began the second half with an 11-4 jaunt to widen their lead to double-digits. Southeast led, 51-40, after McGill's jumper with 15:25 remaining.
Southeast extended its lead to 20 points on five occasions in the final 5:41 of the game. HSU, however, would not go away quietly.
After
Tony Anderson's jumper made it 93-73 with 2:44 on the clock, the Hornets finished strong with an 11-4 run down the stretch.
HSU scored nine of those points from 3-point range with Evan Jones burying all three of those treys before the Hornets fell, 94-84.
Southeast, which turned the ball over five times in the first 8:30, only had five miscues the rest of the way. The Redhawks made 35-of-67 field goals on the day and posted a 57.6 percent (19-of-33) clip in the second half
alone.
Defensively, the Redhawks forced 22 turnovers and turned those into 32 points, including 16 in transition.
"We changed our defense from a 2-3 zone to a 1-3-1 zone and that allowed us to get some key baskets in transition," said Ray.
Cleveland led all Southeast scorers with 20 points in 26 minutes, the fourth 20-point game of his career.
Fellow starters McGill (15),
Joel Angus III (12),
Trey Kellum (11) and Jones (11) followed, while Calvin contributed 11, as well. It marked the second-straight game where all five of Southeast's starters finished with double
figures in the scoring column.
McGill (6 assists, 4 steals) and Jones (7 assists, 4 steals) also combined for 13 assists and eight steals.
Additionally, Southeast had six players score double figures in a game for the first time since seven different Redhawks accomplished the feat vs. Murray State on Mar. 1, 2014.
Fletcher had a game-high 30 points to lead HSU. He was 14-of-20 from the field and pulled down seven rebounds in 36 minutes.
The Hornets shot 56.5 percent (35-of-62) from the floor and made 67.7 percent (21-of-31) of their shots in the second stanza.
Southeast opens its 16-game OVC slate against preseason-favorite Belmont on Dec. 31. Tip-off is set for Noon, CT, at the Show Me Center.
