CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri used a big second half to pull away from NCAA Division II Missouri S&T in a 93-64 exhibition win Saturday afternoon at the Show Me Center.
Â
Southeast shot 60 percent (21-of-35) from the field and outscored S&T, 53-23, in the game's final 20 minutes to overcome a sloppy first half.
Â
"Obviously, I was disappointed with our play in the first half. I though we were undisciplined in our decision-making," said Southeast head coach
Rick Ray. "We did a better job of just calming down on the offensive end and played much better defensively in the second half."
Â
Southeast turned the ball over 15 times and trailed, 41-40, at halftime.
Â
Deadlocked at 47-47 with 15:41 left to play in the second half, Southeast used a 23-7 run to break away and never looked back.
Â
Point guard
Marcus Wallace, who was limited to five minutes after committing three fouls in the first half, knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points to key the surge. Freshman
Jaylin Stewart also added five as the Redhawks widened their lead to 70-54 with 9:34 remaining.
Â
Ahead, 82-61, with 5:11 on the clock, Southeast scored 11 of the game's final 14 points to finish off S&T.
Â
Robby Dosier and
Ladarius Coleman made a layup on back-to-back possessions to get the Redhawks lead to 21 points before the Redhawks tacked on nine more in a quick 1:23.
Â
Tony Anderson's layup gave Southeast its biggest lead at 93-62 with 51 seconds left.
Â
The Redhawks' largest deficit in the first half was seven points after the Miners went on an 8-2 run to grab a 28-21 lead at the 8:34 mark.
Â
Rokas Paulauskas stole the ball from
Isiah Jones and threw down a dunk just before Zach Ellis ended the spurt with a layup.
Â
In all, there were six ties and 11 lead changes in the first half alone.
Â
Wallace and
Trey Kellum led Southeast with 15 points each, while Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference selection
Antonius Cleveland followed with 13.
Â
Wallace pitched in 14 of his points on 5-of-7 field goals, 2-of-3 threes and 2-of-2 free throws in the second half.
Â
Kellum, who sat out the 2014-15 season due to NCAA Division I transfer regulations, went 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 at the free throw line in his first game action with the Redhawks. He also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and contributed a block in his near double-double effort.
Â
Cleveland had nine of his points in the second half and finished at 4-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 at the foul line on the afternoon.
Â
Every other Redhawk scored at least four points and logged a minimum of nine minutes.
Â
Freshman
Eric McGill scored seven points and pulled down six rebounds in a team-high 27 minutes. Stewart had a nice game, as well, scoring eight points to go along with seven rebounds in 12 minutes. Like Wallace, he also buried two 3-pointers.
Â
As a team, Southeast shot 84.2 percent at the free throw line, knocking down 16 of its 19 attempts. In addition, the Redhawks outscored S&T, 52-22, in the paint with 32 of those points coming in the second half.
Â
"After making poor decisions against their pressure defense in the first half, I thought the biggest thing we did was get the ball in the paint," said Ray. "We took care of the ball and finished at the rim better in the second half."
Â
Telloy Simon scored 15 points and Paulauskas turned in a double-double 11 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Miners. S&T shot just 16.7 percent from 3-point range and made only one three (1-of-14) in the second half.
Â
The Redhawks were without forward
Joel Angus III and guard
Jamaal Calvin. Angus III did not dress due to a mild concussion and Calvin started a four-game suspension due to a violation of departmental policies and procedures. Calvin returns from his suspension when Southeast travels to Texas Rio Grande Valley (Nov. 24).
Â
Southeast opens its 2015-16 season at preseason Atlantic 10 favorite Dayton on Nov. 13.
