Let's ReviewThe Redhawks played at No. 3 Jacksonville State in game one of the OVC Tournament on Sunday. The Gamecocks' Courtney Hurt scored in the 33rd minute of the game to go up 1-0 on Southeast. The Redhawks stayed focused and poised following the go-ahead goal. Three minutes later,
Natasha Minor connected with
Maddy Cornell to find the back of the net to score the tying goal. It was Cornell's first career goal. The tie would stand and the match was sent into a shootout to decide who moves one. The Redhawks won the shootout 3-2 to eliminate Jacksonville State and advance to the semis.
This is only the second time Southeast has won a shootout in the OVC Tournament. The last time Southeast went into a shootout in the OVC Tournament was in 2007. The Redhawks clinched the tournament crown with a 5-3 shootout win over Samford.
adidas® Goalkeeper of the WeekSophomore goalkeeper
Kindra Lierz was named the season's final adidas® OVC Goalkeeper of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. This is the second weekly honor for Lierz in 2015, who picked up the honor on Sept. 1. This is the fifth time in the sophomore's career she has earned the award. Lierz played all 110 minutes in goal in Thursday's regular season finale at UT Martin. She was a force in net, stopping 16 shots that the Skyhawks put on goal in the game. Despite the offense firing off 42 shots on Southeast, the Skyhawks failed to score on Lierz. Lierz's 16 saves was a career-high. In Sunday's OVC Tournament Quarterfinal match at Jacksonville State, Lierz allowed one goal but made five saves during the double overtime match. During the shootout to determine who would move on, Lierz made four big stops to allow the Redhawks to move on in the OVC Tournament.
New OVC Tournament FormatStarting this season, the first round of the OVC Tournament Championship (featuring the No. 3 through No. 6 seeds) will be played on Sunday at campus sites (higher seeds in each matchup). The winners will then advance to the campus of the No. 1 seed and play the semifinals and championship at that location. Previously, all six teams played on the campus of the No. 1 seed.
No. 5 Morehead State defeated No. 4 UT Martin in the second quarterfinal match on Sunday, 4-2. Morehead State advances to face top-seeded Murray State in the semifinal match on Friday at 2 p.m.
Redhawks Against the FieldThe Redhawks have only one loss against teams in the OVC Tournament field, which came against the regular season champions Murray State. Their only win is against Jacksonville State while they tied Tennessee Tech, UT Martin, and Morehead State.
Ties for DaysWith Sunday's stalemate against Jacksonville State, Southeast set a new program record of seven ties in a season. The old record of five was set in 2003. The Redhawks' five conference ties is also a new program record. The Redhawks' four-match tie streak is also the longest in program history. Since the OVC picked up soccer in 1998, Southeast's seven ties in a season and five in conference play are both league records.
