CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — First-year head coach
Rekha Patterson has announced the signings of three student-athletes to the 2016-17 roster.
The early signees include guards Iyanna McCurdy and Lakyn Gulley as well as forward LaShala Saine.
"I am very pleased to bring Lakyn, Iyanna, and LaShala to Southeast Missouri State," Patterson said. "I am appreciative that not only do they believe in the vision that we have for the program, but they want to play an integral role in restoring pride in Southeast Missouri women's basketball."
Lakyn Gulley | Guard | 5-7 | Owens CC | Fort Wayne, Ind.Guard Lakyn Gulley comes to Southeast from Owens Community College in Perrysburg, Ohio. In five games this season with Owens, Gulley is averaging 13.6 points a game, shoots 43.1% from the field and 36.4% from beyond the arc. She is a 2014 graduate of South Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Following high school, she signed with Cal State Fullerton to continue her basketball career. She played nine games at Fullerton but decided to leave at the end of the semester to attend school closer to home. Gulley was a three-year varsity starter at South Side. As a junior, she averaged 7.3 points, two assists, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game and led her team to a 24-4 record, a 10-0 conference record and a trip to the Indiana state championship game. In that game, she recorded nine points in a 54-51 loss to undefeated Bedford North Lawrence. Gulley was a two-time First Team All-Summit Athletic Conference (SAC) selection and led her team to three sectional championships in addition to her state championship game run. She is the daughter of Nathaniel and Angela Gulley.
Patterson on Gulley: "Lakyn will bring valuable college experience to our program. She is a talented shooter and passer, with a good feel for the game."
Iyanna McCurdy | Guard | 5-9 | Friends' Central School | Philadelphia, Penn. Guard Iyanna McCurdy hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she has been a four-year starter and letterwinner at Friends' Central School. As a junior, McCurdy averaged 18 points, 7.9 assists, and 3.7 steals a game. She was named her team MVP and Captain last year as a junior. She averaged 17 points a game as a sophomore and was named the team MVP. She earned her team's Most Improved Player award as a freshman. She has also participated in Track & Field during high school. She is the daughter of Edward Anthony and Katrina McCurdy. McCurdy plans on majoring in Sport Management or Sport Medicine at Southeast.
Patterson on McCurdy: "Iyanna will upgrade our athleticism and defensive ability immediately. Her long arms and attacking mentality will help with the way we want to play."
LaShala Saine | Forward | 6-4 | West Memphis High School | West Memphis, Ark.Forward LaShala Saine has been a two-year starter and three-year letterwinner at West Memphis High School out of West Memphis, Arkansas. Saine is a two-time all-conference performer in the post for West Memphis during her sophomore and junior campaigns. She averaged five blocks and six rebounds per game as a junior. As a sophomore, she averaged four blocks and five rebounds to help lead her team to a conference championship and an appearance in the state final four. She is the daughter of Carl Saine and Gwendolyn Sykes. She intends to major in Computer Programming at Southeast.
Patterson on Saine: "Lashayla's size and athleticism will be something different for our fans. She is a great athlete with good basketball knowledge and we are excited to help her grow."
