Battle of the Hawks
The Southeast Missouri volleyball team will return to action Tuesday when they hit the road for Martin, Tennessee for a showdown with the UT Martin Skyhawks. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Skyhawk Fieldhouse. The match can be viewed for free on the OVC Digital Network.
 
Looking Back
The Redhawks went 0-2 to begin the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference slate over the weekend. Southeast fell to Murray State in three sets then lost to Austin Peay in four. Despite coming home winless, the Redhawks played their opponents very close. Southeast had 100 kills on the weekend while Murray and Austin Peay had 103. The Redhawks hit .237 while their opponents hit .253. The Redhawks tallied twice as many blocks as their opponents with 18. In conference-only games, the Redhawks lead the league with 2.57 blocks per set. Taylor Masterson had 10 blocks on the weekend while Nzingha Clarke had seven of her own.
 
Offensive Prowess
The Redhawks are sporting the fifth-best team hitting percentage in the league with .199; up from .193 entering OVC play. Kelsey Keeve (.342) and Taylor Masterson (.339) rank fourth and fifth individually in hitting percentage. Kill-wise, the Redhawks rank sixth with 12.12 kills per set; up from 11.82 prior to the weekend.
 
Scouting the Skyhawks
UT Martin opened league play with a pair of road losses at Austin Peay and Murray State. Emily Keaton became the ninth player in Skyhawk program history to reach 1,000 career kills over the weekend, registering 38 kills (4.22 per set) and accumulating 31 digs (3.44 per set). Madison Bergren hit .450 with 91 assists (10.11 per set) while Chelsea Bowles tallied a team-best 40 digs (4.44 per set) to lead the Skyhawk defense.
 
Record Against
The Redhawks hold a large margin of victory over the Skyhawks all-time as Southeast has a 57-16 record against UT Martin. Last season, the Redhawks fell in five sets at UT Martin but swept the Skyhawks when they came to Houck Field House later in the season.
 
Setting Up
Southeast Missouri volleyball will kick off the 2014 Homecoming agenda Friday evening when they welcome the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles to Cape Girardeau. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. Southeast Missouri soccer will be hosting UT Martin Friday evening as well. Fans will receive two for the price of one admission for both volleyball and soccer. Friday will also be the annual Pink Up night to kick off the 2014 Dig For Life campaign.
