Series HistorySoutheast meets Kansas for the first time this season. Saturday's game marks the 2014 opener for the Jayhawks. KU is just the second Big 12 Conference opponent the Redhawks face in their football history. Southeast played Missouri twice, although one of those matchups was when the Tigers were in the Big 12. Missouri won both of those games by scores of 20-0 in 1936 and 52-3 in 2008. The Tigers initially joined the Big 12 in 1996.
Southeast Wins Season-OpenerThe Redhawks began the
Tom Matukewicz era with a 77-0 rout of Missouri Baptist on Aug. 28 at Houck Stadium. Kickoff was delayed a half-hour due to lightning before Southeast throttled the Spartans who are in their first year of football. The Redhawks improved to 9-15 all-time in season-opening games and 15-9 in home-openers since joining the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. Southeast won its home-opener for the seventh time in nine years.
Tough Stretch AheadSoutheast faces a tall order in the remainder of its non-conference schedule. After the Redhawks travel to Football Bowl Subdivision Kansas this week, they go to regional-rival Southern Illinois on Sept. 13. The Salukis are No. 25 in this week's FCS Coaches Poll. A week later, Southeast will return home to host No. 3 Southeastern Louisiana during its Family Weekend on Sept. 20.
Against the FBSThe Redhawks are 1-18 all-time against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. Southeast has dropped its last 13 matchups with FBS schools. Additionally, the Redhawks have never beaten a BCS team.

* Southeast will play at Missouri on Sept. 5, 2015.
Redhawks Score Most Points in Week OneSoutheast's 77 points against Missouri Baptist (Aug. 28) were the most scored by any team in Division I football during the opening week of the 2014 season. Fellow Ohio Valley Conference member Murray State (73 pts. vs. Union) and Texas State (65 pts. vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff) had the next highest point totals behind the Redhawks. The 77 points were the most scored in a game in Southeast's NCAA Division I tenure.
Nice DefenseWhile the offense put up plenty of points against Missouri Baptist (Aug. 28), the defense also made a splash in its 2014 debut. Southeast shutout its first non-conference opponent since 1990 and notched only its third shutout since joining the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. The Redhawks held the Spartans to only 81 total yards. That shattered Southeast's previous low of 137 yards allowed vs. Sam Houston State on Sept. 11, 1993.
Total EffortSoutheast racked up 516 yards of total offense against Missouri Baptist (Aug. 28), its most since getting 537 at Murray State in 2012. The Redhawks ran for 304 yards and posted eight rushing touchdowns, averaging 7.6 yards per carry along the way. Southeast last had 500 or more yards of total offense in a game when it piled up 510 vs. Tennessee State in 2012.
Snyder ImpressesIn his fifth career start and first since Oct. 5, 2013,
Kyle Snyder completed 10-of-12 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 33 yards and a pair of TDs on six carries vs. Missouri Baptist (Aug. 28). Snyder, a transfer from Ohio University, is one of two quarterbacks from the Mid-American Conference on this year's roster. He engineered Southeast's first seven scoring drives of the game. Snyder was officially named the Redhawks starting quarterback on Aug. 16.
Wilson Scores Defensive TDTrue freshman nose tackle
Joshua Wilson scored Southeast's first defensive touchdown of the season when he recovered a fumble in the end zone vs. Missouri Baptist (Aug. 28). A native of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Wilson fell on the ball after
Roper Garrett hit JP Lowery. He was one of 23 players who played in their first game with the Redhawks a week ago.
Strong StartThe kicking game was a major area of concern for the Redhawks last season, but you wouldn't know it with the way they started off this year. Southeast, which ranked last in the Ohio Valley Conference in both PATs (25-of-34, 73.5 pct.) and field goals (5-of-13, 38.5 pct.) in 2013, made a perfect 11-of-11 PATs vs. Missouri Baptist (Aug. 28).
Ryan McCrum made all seven of his tries, while newcomer
Clay Pickler added 4-of-4 PATs. McCrum nearly matched his entire 2013 season total of eight (8-of-11) extra points.
Long Return for DavisSpencer Davis' 61-yard punt return set up Southeast's first touchdown of the season. The 61-yard punt return marked the longest of Davis' career. It was also the fourth-longest punt return in school history. Davis has never returned a punt for a touchdown in his Redhawks career.
Kansas ConnectionSaturday's game will mean something special to Southeast defensive end
John Popovich. Both of Popovich's parents (Pete and Angie) are Kansas graduates. His father, Pete, played football for KU in the 1980s. Popovich had two tackles and one quarterback hurry in the Redhawks season-opener vs. Missouri Baptist (Aug. 28).
Let's Get Another "W"A win at Kansas Saturday will give Southeast its first winning streak since 2010. The Redhawks last winning streak ran from Sept. 11-Nov. 6 (nine games) that year. Since then, Southeast has not won two in a row in a season.
Starting StreakCorey Porter has made 24-consecutive starts on the offensive line. A native of nearby Sikeston, Porter started at left tackle for the first time in his career vs. Missouri Baptist (Aug. 28). Before that, he spent the last two seasons as Southeast's starting center.
About KansasBig 12 Conference affiliate Kansas kicks off its 2014 season at home against Southeast Saturday. The Jayhawks enter their third year under Charlie Weis. The 35-year veteran Weis coached 16 years in the NFL and assisted two of the greatest coaches in NFL history - Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick. He owns four Super Bowl rings. Weis was also the head coach at Notre Dame from 2005-09 and spent the 2011 season as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Florida. KU, which went 3-9 overall and 1-8 a year ago, has finished last in the Big 12 four-straight seasons. In fact, three-time reigning Football Championship Subdivision champion North Dakota State has more Big 12 wins in the last four seasons than KU. The Bison beat Iowa State (2014), Kansas State (2013) and Kansas (2010) in that span.
