CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri track and field teams have one final chance to qualify or improve their marks for the NCAA West Region Preliminary Round.
The Redhawks will send six individuals to the Cardinal Twilight in Louisville, Kentucky, on Friday and have another 17 student-athletes to the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday and Saturday.
The Redhawks currently have 15 athletes who rank in the top-48, the qualifying cut off, in the west region.
Reggie Miller, Blake Smith and Kevin Farley lead the way for the Redhawks as they are both currently in the top-48 in two events. Miller owns the highest ranking of the Redhawks, currently sitting in third place in the triple jump. He also is ranked 25th in the high jump. Smith is ranked 13th in the long jump and 41st in the 100-meter dash. Farley is ranked 16th in the hammer throw and 34th in the shot put.
Shon Kyle is ranked 41st in the discus and is just outside looking in with the shot put. The junior currently is 49th in the west region in the shot put.
Chris Martin is tied with Miller with the third-best triple jump in the region while Brian Grote and Chris Navarro are currently in the top-48 in the javelin throw.
On the women's side, Jessica Brown appears to be locked in with a long jump ranking 35th in the region. Kayla Gutierrez and Sarah hall own the 32nd and 39th-best hammer throws, respectively.
Courtney Gapelu looks to make her second-straight appearance in the preliminary round in the shot put as she is ranked 32nd. Fifth-year transfer Brittany Pfeiffer is ranked 31st in the javelin throw.
In the triple jump, Ahshane Johnson and Kim Moye are ranked 10 spots apart, in 30th and 40th, respectively.
All of the athletes currently in the top-48 can improve upon their marks or be bumped out in the final weekend of competition.
Outside of the individuals listed above, the Redhawks will send Alexander Anderson, Kendrick Farr, Mike Peters, Ayonna Cartwright and Prenecia Ponds to the Georgia Tech Invitational to try and break into the top-48.
The six athletes going to Louisville, to also try and break into the top-48 are Gloria Westlake, Alyssa Rebecca, Madalyn Stichnot, Christian Locke, Jason Walker and Charles Johnson.
The Georgia Tech Invitational is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday with field events. Running events kick off at 4:30 p.m. Action on Saturday begins at 10 a.m. The Louisville Twilight begins at 9 a.m. for field events and a rolling scheduled for running events at 3 p.m.
