Game 2 Box ScoreCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (7-20, 2-7) was swept by Belmont (11-20, 5-6) in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Southeast Softball Complex. The Redhawks lost by scores of 6-0 and 14-5.
Southeast committed eight errors in the twin bill, including a season-high six in the nightcap.
Belmont struck first when it loaded the bases with one out during its opening at-bat of the game. Jessica Wilson led off with a single up the middle and went to second on a walk by Chelsey Deloney. Mia Vierra followed with a single to right and Taylor Moon walked on four pitches to push across the first run.
The Bruins added another run in the third before scoring twice in each of the fifth and seventh innings to complete their win.
Kirbie Ferrell delivered a leadoff triple and touched home on a sacrifice fly by Kat Hollingsworth in the third.
Two innings later, Deloney knocked in both Wilson and Hollingsworth on a two-out single to right. Daley and Mia Vierra each had RBI-hits to top off the Bruins 6-0 victory.
Southeast was outhit 11-4 and had a runner get past second base just once.
Taylor Moon and Carolyn Snodgrass combined on the four-hit shutout. Moon, who improved to 6-5 on the season, gave up three hits and struck out eight in six innings. Snodgrass struck out one and gave up the other hit in one inning of work.
Hannah Durham (2-6) took the loss. Durham scattered five hits, allowed two runs, struck out two and walked three in four innings.
Keaira Schilling pitched the final three innings, giving up four runs on six hits.
Defensively, the Redhawks committed two errors.
Southeast led, 5-0, after two innings during game two.
Nicole Deering and
Leah Duffe each hit safely and scored twice at the top of the lineup to help grab the Redhawks the early lead.
Belmont quickly pulled to within two in the third thanks to a two-RBI triple by Daly and a sacrifice fly by Deloney.
The Redhawks defense then crumbled in the fourth, committing five errors which resulted in 11 unearned runs for the Bruins. Belmont sent 15 hitters to the plate with Wells, Ferrell, Ashley Hammer, Wilson, Kayla Brown, Vierra and Amanda Criscione all scoring at least once. The Bruins added eight hits during their big inning.
Durham (2-7) also suffered the loss in game two, as Belmont when ahead with her in the circle. Durham gave up seven hits and 10 runs (all unearned) in just 1.1 innings.
Vierra (2-4) was credited with the win. She struck out two, walked three and allowed a hit in 3.1 scoreless innings.
Hammer, Ferrell, Hollingsworth, Daly and MJ Lawson each had two hits for Belmont, which pounded out 15 in the nightcap.
Deering went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI to lead Southeast.
Savannah Carpenter followed with two hits and two RBI.
The Redhawks return to action Sunday when they host Tennessee State in a doubleheader. First pitch is Noon, CT.
