AUBURN, Ala. - After Friday's portion of the War Eagle Invitational got postponed, the Southeast Missouri track and field team made Saturday count, leading with a school record while two distance runners competed in the Kansas Relays.
The War Eagle Invitational was hosted by Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., while the Kansas Relays took place in Lawrence, Kan.
Kayla Gutierrez broke the school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.30 meters to finish in second place. Her mark is nearly 12 feet farther than the previous school record. Sarah Hall made it back-to-back finishes for the Redhawks with a toss of 57.51 meters.
"The hammer throw was pretty interesting," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "On Kayla's first throw, she got the record. Then Sarah was right after her, and she broke Kayla's new record.
"In the next round, Sarah upped it even more. Then on the last throw Kayla got the largest throw. They just swapped it back and forth and it was exciting to watch."
Reggie Miller continues to impress on the season winning the triple jump with a leap of 15.84 meters. Miller's jump increases his OVC lead in the event and is the fifth-best jump in school history. In the same event, Chris Martin claimed second place with a jump of 15.32 meters.
Miller also claimed third place in the high jump with a leap of 2.02 meters.
The Redhawks javelin tandem of Bethany Pfeiffer and Brian Grote each scored third place finishes. Grote, fresh off his OVC Field Athlete of the Week award, had a toss of 57.36 meters. Pfeiffer had a toss of 43.19 meters.
Courtney Gapelu had a fourth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 14.84 meters while Shon Kyle finished in sixth place with a toss of 16.27 meters on the men's side. Kyle also had a fourth place finish in the discus with a toss of 49.30 meters.
In the women's long jump, Jessica Brown snagged a fifth place finish with a leap of 5.79 meters.
Kim Moye claimed a fifth place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 11.77 meters.
Tyler Holmes finished in ninth place of the 800-meter run. His time of 1:55.52 moves into the eighth-best time in the OVC this season.
In the women's 400-meter dash, Cheyenne Tunti finished in 10th place in a personal-best 56.05. The time also ranks as the fifth-best mark in the OVC.
At the Kansas Relays, Mary Dohogne and Charles Johnson each competed in the invite steeplechase. Dohogne finished in seventh place in a time of 11:51.22 while Johnson claimed an eighth place finish crossing the line in 9:43.23.
"The weather was about the worst that we have seen all year," distance coach Ryan Lane said. "It was also one of the longest days. We were glad to get a good effort in.
"Our focus is getting ready for the conference meet. We'll have a lot of our kids rest next weekend to get ready for the conference meet."
The Redhawks have one more weekend of preparation for the Ohio Valley Conference Championships that take place May 2 and 3. Next weekend, Southeast travels to State University Park, Ark., for the Arkansas State Open. The two-day meet begins Friday before concluding Saturday.
"I like where we are at for the most part," Crumpecker added. "We have a week here to get it together. We have a couple of spots I would like to see get more consistent. But I like where we are at."
