Redhawks Fall to Tennessee Tech in Twin Bill

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Keaira Schilling carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning for the Southeast Missouri softball team but the Redhawks were unable to convert the momentum into a victory Saturday at the Southeast Softball Complex against Tennessee Tech.
 
The Golden Eagles swept the twin bill, improving to 18-32 overall and 10-11 in the OVC while the Redhawks slip to 7-29, 2-16 in the OVC.
 
Despite breaking out of an offensive slump with seven hits, the Redhawks fell 5-3 in game two.
 
The Redhawks loaded the bases in the second inning of game two to score their first run. Chelsea Smith reached on a fielder's choice and was advanced to second on an error during Meghan Touchette's at-bat. Kelsey Gass singled through the left side to load the bases for Renee Terry. Terry hit a single into left center field to score Smith from third.
 
Tennessee Tech answered back in the fifth inning with four runs. TTU loaded the bases on walks when Angi Sakamoto hit into a fielder's choice to knot the game at one apiece.
 
The Golden Eagles kept the pressure on with Madison Taylor hitting a single up the middle scoring two runs, the first hit for Tennessee Tech in the game. Alyssa Richards hit in the final run of the inning with a single into center field.
 
The Redhawks put a mini rally together in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs on two hits. KC Saxe, pinch runner for Savannah Carpenter scored on a Leah Duffe single down the left field line.
 
Smith then hit a single into left field scoring Haylee Krack, who reached base on a walk. Tennessee Tech brought in game one starter Danielle Liberatore, who snuffed out the rest of the Redhawks rally.
 
Tennessee Tech added an insurance run in the top of the sixth as Gabby Perez hit a single down the right field line, scoring Chelsea Burgess.
 
Despite Schilling's four no-hit innings, she was charged with the loss, falling to 2-12 while Hannah Weaver improved her record to 6-16. Liberatore earned the save.
 
Tennessee Tech won the first game 3-0, scoring the first run of the game in the third inning as Madison Taylor hit a homerun that snuck just inside the right field foul pole.
 
The Golden Eagles added a run in the fourth and fifth. In the fourth, Taylor hit a double into left field scoring Gabby Perez from third base. In the fifth, Gabby Perez it into a fielders choice, scoring Kendall Hooper, who beat the throw home with the bases loaded.
 
Left fielder Jamie Woodworth went 2-for-3 for the Redhawks while Taylor went 3-for-4 for the Golden Eagles.
 
Aubrey Denno was charged with the loss, moving to 3-8 on the season while Danielle Liberatore had seven strikeouts in the victory, moving to 10-10.
 
The Redhawks travel up I-55 on Wednesday for a doubleheader with Saint Louis. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
