
Gutierrez has Top-Five Throw in Day 1 of Alabama Relays

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Southeast Missouri track and field team kicked off its outdoor campaign Thursday at the Alabama Relays. A limited first day of events consisted of half of the decathlon, the men's and women's hammer throw and the men's javelin throw.
Chris Navarro had a great start in the decathlon, placing first in the shot put and high jump. The junior-transfer had a toss of 12.80 meters to claim the top spot in the shot put. He also had a leap of 1.86 meters in the high jump to finish first in the event.
Navarro also had a strong showing in the 100-meter dash, finishing fourth in 11.32 seconds and finishing sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.30 meters.
The five remaining events include the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, javelin throw, pole vault and 1500-meter run.
Brian Grote scored a sixth-place finish in the javelin throw with a heave of 61.05 meters. Navarro, competing in the event not part of the decathlon, finished a place behind in seventh, with a throw of 60.67 meters.
Grote's toss ranks as the seventh-best in school history while Navarro's places ninth-best in school history.
Kayla Gutierrez placed fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.20 meters while Bethany Pfeiffer had a toss of 49.85 meters to place eighth.
Gutierrez's throw is just behind her personal-best and ranks fourth-best in school history.
Day two of the three-day meet begins Friday at 10 am. with field events and 5 p.m. for running events.
