Redhawks Split Doubleheader with UMSL

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (5-8) split a doubleheader with in-state rival Missouri-St. Louis (8-2) Saturday at the Southeast Softball Complex. The Redhawks came from behind to win game one, 5-4, and dropped the nightcap, 6-4.
Southeast Missouri 5, Missouri-St. Louis 4 (8 Innings)
Haylee Krack drew a walk-off bases on balls and pinch-runner KC Saxe touched home for the game-winning run to give Southeast Missouri a 5-4 come-from-behind victory in game one.
Saxe was placed on second base via the international tiebreaker rule and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Deering. Savannah Carpenter and Lindsey Patterson were both intentionally walked after that. Krack ran the count to 3-2 before reaching base on her fifth walk of the season.
Southeast fell behind in the top of the first inning when Alex Stupek launched a grand slam over the left field wall off freshman pitcher Keaira Schilling to give the Tritons a 4-0 advantage. Schilling gave up four hits and four runs, and issued two walks in just one-third of an inning.
The Redhawks capitalized on two errors and tied the game in the bottom of the third. Kelsey Gass and Summer Burger each walked and Gass went to went to third on an error. After Renee Terry popped up to short, Nicole Deering reached on a throwing error, allowing both Burger and Gass to score. Savannah Carpenter's single to center knocked in Deering and Krack doubled home Carpenter to bring the game to a 4-4 deadlock.
There were only five baserunners between the two teams after the third inning before the international tiebreaker decided the game in extra innings.
Hannah Durham (2-1) was credited with the win in relief after striking out seven in 7.2 scoreless innings. She scattered four hits and did not allow a walk. Durham faced 26 hitters.
Left-hander Hannah Perryman (3-2) suffered the loss. Perryman worked 7.1 innings, allowing three hits, five runs and walking six along the way. She also recorded 14 strikeouts, including six-straight to start the game.
Carpenter, Krack and Burger each had one hit for Southeast, while Stupek went 2-for-4 with a run scored and for RBI to lead UMSL.
Missouri-St. Louis 6, Southeast Missouri 4
Brittni Chapman struck out four and pitched a complete game, while Brianna Butler hit a two-run home run to key Missouri-St. Louis' 6-4 win in game two.
UMSL pulled ahead, 3-0, on Butler's round-tripper in the fourth inning.
Southeast cut the lead to a run with two unearned tallies in the bottom of the fourth before Stupek scored on a fielder's choice to give UMSL a 4-2 advantage in the sixth.
The Redhawks, however, quickly made it a one-run game again when they loaded the bases with one out during their at-bat in the sixth. Chelsea Smith's pinch-hit walk scored Summer Burger to slice the Tritons lead to 4-3. UMSL then silenced Southeast's rally with an inning-ending double play.
The Tritons added two more runs and Southeast came up empty with the tying run at the plate in the final inning.
Chapman (4-0) gave up eight hits and four runs, while striking out four and walking one in seven innings.
Aubrey Denno (2-4) suffered the loss. Denno allowed four runs on six hits, struck out seven and walked one in 5.1 innings. Durham was charged with the other two runs in the last 1.2 innings.
Southeast outhit UMSL, 8-6, with Carpenter, Leah Duffe and Jamie Woodworth chipping in two hits apiece.
The Redhawks begin their spring break with a home game against North Dakota State Tuesday.
