CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Krista Menke recorded nine strikeouts and fell one out shy of a perfect game to lead North Dakota State (16-9) to an 11-0 win over Southeast Missouri (5-9) Tuesday afternoon at the Southeast Softball Complex.
Menke retired the first 14 hitters she faced and gave up her only hit on a 3-2 count in the bottom of the fifth inning. Leah Duffe hit the ball high enough to get over Menke's head. The ball went off her glove on the tough play and landed in front of shortstop Logan Moreland.
Southeast had no baserunners and struck out eight times prior to Duffe's infield hit.
While Menke had everything going on in the circle, the NDSU offense gave her plenty of run support.
Ahead, 5-0, after three innings, the Bison used a five-run fourth inning to blow the game open.
NDSU batted around to score five runs on six hits and an error during its big inning. Jackie Stifter led off with a double out of the nine-hole and came around to score with the help of an infield single and error. Logan Moreland followed with a double to left center and Alex Sobrero scored. Amanda Grable delivered a one-out single to knock in both Moreland and Cheyenne Garcia. Brandi Enriquez's infield single then brought home Grable to give the Bison a 10-0 advantage.
Stifter led things off with a double again in the fifth and touched home on back-to-back hits by Sobrero and Moreland to complete the 11-0 shutout in five innings.
Menke, who improved to 11-3 this season, did not allow a walk and retired 15 of the 16 hitters she faced in her one-hit gem.
Hannah Durham (2-2) suffered the loss for Southeast. Durham got behind early, giving up five runs on four hits in 1.1 innings. She struck out two and walked two, as well.
Freshmen Aubrey Denno and Keaira Schilling pitched the rest of the way. Denno allowed five hits in two innings, while Schilling struck out two, allowed a run and gave up four hits in the final 1.2 frames.
NDSU outhit Southeast, 13-1, with seven hits, seven runs and seven RBI coming from its top-four hitters. Sobrero went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Moreland finished at 2-for-4 with three runs, a double and two RBI, Garcia went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and three RBI and Jenina Ortega was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
The Redhawks head to Indiana State for a doubleheader Wednesday.
