Box Score | PDF Box Score

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri volleyball team earned their first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season Friday when they swept the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech (25-16, 25-13, 25-15).

The Redhawks improve to 5-12 overall and 1-3 in OVC play. TTU falls to 7-13, 2-2 OVC.

The Redhawks steamrolled the Golden Eagles as Southeast trailed only once in the entire match. As a team, Southeast hit a respectable .248 while Tennessee Tech hit a -.036.

"This is a very big win for us, not just at home but also in conference play," said head coach Julie Yankus. "Winning in conference is huge, regardless of what team it is. Tech came into the match 2-1 with a great start to their conference season. That shows what we have the capability of doing and I am very happy with how we came out and played this evening.

"Everyone contributed a lot. We distributed the ball very well and our blocking really slowed down their offense and made them hit into a lot of errors."

Southeast started tacking on points in the first set and never looked back as they cruised to a 25-16 opening set victory. Madalyn Werths had five kills in the opening stanza and hit .556.

It was a similar story in the second set as the Redhawks laid down the law, 25-13.

Coming out of the intermission, the Golden Eagles put up their biggest fight of the match. TTU jumped out to an early lead and were able to hold it about half of the set. The Redhawks then caught fire and never looked back as they cruised to a 25-15 set three victory, downing the Golden Eagles in three sets.

Andrea Baylin recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 14 digs. Baylin hit .281 in the match.

Werths finished with eight kills on the night, hitting .300. Kelsey Keeve had six kills while hitting .308.

As a team, the Redhawks blocking was once again strong as they tallied seven team blocks. Jessica McElderry led the way on the net with four blocks. McElderry also contributed four kills with a .364 hitting clip.

The Redhawks will return to action next Friday, Oct. 10 at Eastern Kentucky.
