Box Score | PDF Box Score

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri volleyball fell in three sets to Belmont Saturday (16-25, 20-25, 17-25).

The Redhawks finish their five-game home stand going 3-2 overall and 3-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Southeast is now 9-15, 5-5 in OVC play. Belmont improves to 12-12, 8-2 OVC.

"Overall, we had a good home stand and we made good progress going 3-1 in conference play," said Julie Yankus. "Being at home for a while showed a good change in the mentality of the team and I've been happy with our performances the last five matches.

"Not to make any excuses, but we had some injuries and illnesses that really affected the play of the team today. We just couldn't stop Belmont from scoring. We were getting the amount of kills we wanted but we couldn't stop them from terminating and we made errors we normally don't make."

Belmont never trailed in the opening set as they downed Southeast 25-16. The Redhawks committed 10 attack errors in the opening set.

The second set was close as the score was knotted up nine times and the lead changed four times. All square at 17, Belmont used two points to take a lead on Southeast. The two-point lead was enough for Belmont to stay in front and win the tight set, 25-20.

The beginning of the third set was close but a mid-set run by Belmont put them out in front. Southeast was never able to recover and Belmont wrapped up the match with a six-point run, 25-17. The Redhawks did hit .378 in the final set.

Taylor Masterson finished the match with 12 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Andrea Baylin had nine kills on the day.

"Taylor continued to play well today and she is still towards the top of the conference in hitting. We just need to keep getting her the ball."

Southeast returns to the road when they take on Eastern Illinois Oct. 31 and SIUE Nov. 1.

Yankus added, "It's nice that we just played EIU and SIUE so their game play is fresh in our minds. Getting our middles working and spreading our offense frustrated those teams a couple weeks ago so that's our game plan going into next weekend."
