CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri volleyball swept Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee State Friday evening in three sets (28-26, 25-18, 25-22).

Southeast improves to 9-14 overall and 5-4 in OVC play with their fourth-straight OVC win. Tennessee State is now 9-16, 3-7 OVC.

"Overall we played pretty good tonight," said
Julie Yankus. "I am very proud of how our outsides played. Tennessee State did a good job of slowing down our middles, which is something no one else has done yet and thankfully our outsides stepped up. Overall, I'm very happy with our ball control and getting in system. Also seeing four players in double-digit digs means everyone was stepping up to take balls."

It was an unbelievable close opening set. The set was tied a total of 12 times in the set and the lead changed five times. After a constant battle throughout the set, Southeast found themselves with set point, 24-22. Tennessee State tied it at 24 followed by Southeast regaining the advantage 25-24. The Tigers then tied it and took an advantage, 26-25. Southeast used three-straight points to wrap up the set, 28-26, and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Andrea Baylin had seven kills in the opening stanza.

"We were terminating well in set one but didn't execute on a couple plays we should have and Tennessee State really swung aggressively. We remained composed and confident, even when they had set point."

After an intense first set, it was all Southeast in the second. The Redhawks never trailed in the set as they cruised to a 25-18 second set win. As a team, Southeast had their second, four-block set.

Tennessee State came out play after the intermission. The Tigers took an early lead on the Redhawks but Southeast remained within striking distance. Southeast battled to tie the set up at 15 but fell behind again. The Redhawks found a 21-20 lead and were able to hold off the Tigers and wrap up the set, 25-22, and the match in three sets.

Baylin finished the match with 15 kills and a .265 hitting clip and 13 digs.
Krissa Gearring had 10 kills in the contest with a .474 hitting percentage.
Taylor Masterson put up six blocks on the night with eight kills.

In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness month and Southeast's Dig for Life campaign, Southeast honored eight breast cancer survivors during Friday evening's intermission.

"We were so happy having our breast cancer survivors with us tonight. I got meet a couple after the match and it was an honor to have these brave women with us. Dig For Life is such a remarkable thing our team is a part of and to see it grow every year is phenomenal. We get more survivors every year and we hope to get more in order to honor their bravery."Â
Southeast Missouri takes on Belmont Saturday at 2 p.m. from Houck Field House.Â
