Series HistorySoutheast trails its all-time series against Eastern Kentucky by a count of 3-21. The Redhawks are 2-10 against the Colonels at Roy Kidd Stadium, where they last won, 41-38, on Oct. 18, 2003. Since then, EKU has taken nine of the last 10 meetings between these teams and holds a three-game winning streak in the series. Southeast lost to the Colonels by identical 31-7 scores each of the last two years.
Redhawks Drop Second-StraightThe Redhawks recently suffered their first home loss and second-straight defeat when they fell, 52-13, against Eastern Illinois (Oct. 18). Southeast had five turnovers and was held to a season-lown 96 rushing yards and 13 points. The Redhawks were also shutout in the second half for the first time this season. EIU became the first opponent to score more than 50 points at Houck Stadium since Southern Illinois put up 58 on Sept. 2, 2005. Southeast is on a two-game losing streak for the second time in 2014.
Tall OrderSoutheast squares off against its fourth ranked opponent when it visits No. 18/19 Eastern Kentucky this week. The Colonels are currently 6-1 overall and second in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 3-1 mark. EKU was the league's last undefeated team until its 39-31 loss to Tennessee Tech a week ago. TTU scored 29 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull off the come-from-behind victory. The Redhawks are 2-1 against ranked Football Championship Subdivision opponents this year.
Away from HomeThe next time Southeast will play at home will be at the start of basketball season. After Saturday's game at Eastern Kentucky, the Redhawks are idle on Nov. 1. Southeast then heads to Tennessee Tech for the Ohio Valley Conference ESPN3 Game of the Week on Nov. 8. The Redhawks next home game isn't until they host Austin Peay on Nov. 15, the opening weekend of the 2014-15 college basketball campaign.
Garrett Reaches Career-HighLinebacker
Roper Garrett tied an Ohio Valley Conference single-game high and established a new career-high with 19 tackles against Eastern Illinois (Oct. 18). Garrett registered double-digit tackles for the fifth time in eight starts this season. He had six solo stops and assisted on 13 others, and had eight tackles in the first quarter. He leads the OVC with 90 total tackles and is both second in the league and ninth in the nation with 11.3 per game.
Can I Join You?Roper Garrett wasn't the only Redhawk who turned in double-digit tackles against Eastern Illinois (Oct. 18).
Hunter Bledsoe and
Marlon Hampton also added season-highs in tackles with 11 and 10, respectively. It was the first time this year where Southeast had three players with 10 or more tackles in a game.
10 More to GoRoper Garrett needs just 10 more tackles to get 100 this season. If Garrett hits that mark, he will be the third Southeast player in four years to get 100 or more tackles in a season. Blake Peiffer was the last to do it with 117 tackles in 2012. Garrett presently has 155 tackles in his two-year Redhawk career.
Lloyd on the MoveIn addition to being Southeast's top receiver with 526 yards on 37 catches,
Peter Lloyd is making a big impact on special teams. Lloyd has piled up 100 or more kick return yards in each of his first two games. He ran back three kicks for 100 yards at Murray State (Oct. 11) and followed that up with seven returns for 162 yards against Eastern Illinois (Oct. 18). Those efforts have lifted Lloyd to second in the Ohio Valley Conference in kick return average (26.2 ypr).
Gimme FivePeter Lloyd,
Spencer Davis and
DeMichael Jackson all had at least five catches against Eastern Illinois (Oct. 18). Lloyd caught eight passes for 97 yards, Davis made six grabs for 58 yards and Jackson added five receptions for 17 yards. It marked the first time the Redhawks had three different receivers catch five or more passes in a game since
D.J. Foster,
Paul McRoberts and Matt Bell did so vs. Tennessee State on Oct. 13, 2012.
50-Yard ManThere is a kicker craze swirling in the Southeast football program and it revolves around redshirt-sophomore
Ryan McCrum. McCrum has made a field goal over 50 yards in four of the Redhawks last five games. Most recently, he kicked a 51-yarder in the first quarter against Eastern Illinois (Oct. 18). He owns all of the Ohio Valley Conference's longest field goals (51, 52, 54, 55) this year. Additionally, he has not missed an extra point (26-of-26) this season and leads the league in PAT kicking percentage and field goals (13-of-16). McCrum leads the team and the OVC (scoring kick) in scoring with 65 points in eight games. He is one of two kickers in all of Division I football with four field goals over 50 yards this season. The other is West Virginia's Josh Lambert.
PAT StreakRyan McCrum has made 30-consecutive PATs dating back to last season. McCrum last missed a PAT with 11:33 left in the first quarter at Jacksonville State on Nov. 23, 2013. He is tied for first in the Ohio Valley Conference with 26 extra points in 2014. McCrum made 33-of-36 PATs in his career.
Turnovers CostlyAfter going two-straight games without a turnover, the Redhawks had five in their loss to Eastern Illinois (Oct. 18).
Kyle Snyder threw four interceptions and backup quarterback
Alex Niznak had one. It was the second time this season where Southeast turned the ball over five times in a game.
Ranked FCS TeamsThe Redhawks have played three Top-25 opponents in 2014 and currently stand at 2-1 in those contests. Southeast is 4-17 all-time against ranked FCS foes since 2004.
About Eastern KentuckyEastern Kentucky is looking to bounce back from its first loss of the season. EKU, which enters the week at 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference, suffered a 39-31 setback at Tennessee Tech on Oct. 18. The Colonels boast the league's top scoring offense with an average of 35.4 points per game. EKU leads the OVC in rushing offense (257.1 ypg) and ranks second scoring defense, allowing 18.4 points per contest. Additionally, the Colonels own the OVC's top red zone defense and turnover margin (+2). Dy'Shawn Mobley leads the conference in rushing with 811 yards and eight touchdowns. Kicker Andrew Lloyd is EKU's only Preseason All-OVC pick. Lloyd is second in scoring (kick) with 55 points among OVC individuals.
