Redhawks to Battle at K-State Invitational

The Redhawks will participate in their second tournament of the season.

After the first week of play, Emily Coon earned a portion of the OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri volleyball team travels to Kansas State to partake in their second of four tournaments in 2013. The Redhawks open against host-school K-State Friday at noon then take on Siena College at 5:30 p.m. The Redhawks will close out the tournament against regional rival Southern Illinois, Saturday at 10 a.m.
 
Last Time Out
The Southeast Missouri volleyball team opened the 2013 season at the Maroon Classic hosted by Mississippi State. Southeast fell to the SEC foe in the opening match, 3-0, but turned it around to defeat UALR in five sets that evening. The Redhawks and Bulldogs went head-to-head in a rematch with the Bulldogs to close out the tournament. Southeast came out victorious, 3-1. With a 2-1 record, Southeast won the tournament crown with Emily Coon being named MVP and Colleen Yarber and Julie Shives earning all-tournament honors.
 
Unstoppable
After leading her team to a Maroon Classic Championship, Emily Coon was named Adidas OVC Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Coon was named the MVP of the Maroon Classic after posting 48 kills, 13 blocks and a .433 attack percentage. In the tournament finale, Coon recorded a career-high 23 kills to lead the Redhawks past host-school Mississippi State, taking the tournament title.
 
Scouting Trip
K-State: The Wildcats started the 2013 season 3-0. K-State required five sets in each of their matches at the UNLV Invitational. Kaitlynn Pelger was named MVP of the UNLV Invitational with all-tournament team performances from Taylor Johnson and Kersten Kober. The Wildcats defeated Portland, Cal State Fullerton and host UNLV.
 
Siena: The Saints are 1-2 after winning their season opener against Coppin State and being swept by Hofstra and St. John's at the Hofstra Invitational in Hempstead, New York. Outside hitters, senior Taylor Akana and junior Rachel Stoklosa lead the Saints. Akana leads the team with 3.20 kills per set, and Stoklosa averages 2.40 kills per set. Both players average 2.10 digs per set.
 
Southern Illinois: The Salukis are 1-2 this season after winning their season opener against Connecticut  but dropping their next two matches against IPFW and the other against Duquesne. Senior outside hitters Jessica Whitehead and Elly Braaten lead Southern Illinois. Whitehead leads the team with 3.55 kills per set to go along with her 0.82 blocks per set while Braaten averages 3.00 kills, 1.09 digs and 0.36 blocks.
 
Series Histories
Southeast Missouri and Kansas State have met only once before on Oct. 6, 1978. The Redhawks lost the match 2-0. Friday evening's match with Siena will be the first meeting between the Redhawks and Saints in school history. Southeast and Southern Illinois have a rivalry dating back to 1977. SIU leads all-time, 16-8. The Redhawks lost to the Salukis in 2012 in five sets. SIU has a four-game winning streak against the Redhawks going back to 2008. The Redhawks last beat SIU on Oct. 9, 2007 in four sets.
