Redhawks and Skyhawks Face-off Tuesday in Martin

The Redhawks will hit the road for a midweek match up with UT Martin.

CAPE GIARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri will travel to Ohio Valley Conference West Division foe UT Martin for a midweek match-up with the Skyhawks Tuesday. Both teams went 1-1 to open OVC play at home this past weekend. The Redhawks and Skyhawks will face-off at 6 p.m. at Skyhawk Fieldhouse.
 
Let's Review
Southeast Missouri opened OVC play with a five-set win over Eastern Illinois Friday. Southeast come out of the gate quick, going up 2-0 but EIU was able to catch fire and force a decisive fifth set. The Redhawks were able to hold their own and close out the match to kick conference play off with a win and in front of over 1,000 fans. SIUE came to Cape Saturday on a mission to take down the OVC West favorites and they succeeded. The Redhawks failed to get their offense going as the Cougars came out on top 3-1.
 
A Look Ahead
The Redhawks will return to Houck Field House Saturday, Oct. 5, for their first OVC inter-divsion match-up with East opponent Jacksonville State at 2 p.m. Southeast will hit the road the following weekend for road match-ups with Austin Peay and Murray State.
 
Scouting Trip
UT Martin fell at Alabama A&M before splitting a pair of OVC opening matches. The Skyhawks defeated SIUE before defeating Eastern Illinois. Junior Emily Keaton recorded 35 kills and a .317 hitting percentage. In the SIUE match, Keaton led all players with 15 kills to go with a season-best 17 digs while hitting .433. She followed that up with a match-best 11 kills and a .250 attack percentage against Eastern Illinois. Sophomore Chelsea Bowles led the UTM defense with 42 digs over the three matches last week. Sophomore Amanda Crask dished out 123 assists, including 49 in the win over SIUE. Allie Whimpey also added 34 kills this week while Lyndsey Hazelwood recorded 20 kills and 27 digs.
 
Playing a Wall
Southeast Missouri has consistently led the OVC in blocking this season. Southeast has tallied 143 blocks (60 solo, 166 assisted), 2.27 blocks/set. Taylor Masterson (0.98 blocks/set) and Emily Coon (0.95 blocks/set) rank 4th and 5th in blocking in the OVC.
 
Start it Up
As a team, the Redhawk's offense ranks in the bottom half of the conference in hitting (.171 hitting percentage) and ranks last in kills (11.08 kills/set); however, individually, Emily Coon ranks fourth in the OVC in hitting percentage (.315) and Colleen Yarber ranks third in the kills category (188; 3.36 kills/set).
 
There's No Place like Home
Julie Yankus, now in her third season at the helm of the Redhawks, has garnered a 16-6 record at the friendly confines of Houck Field House. In home openers, she is 3-0 and 15-5 in OVC matches at home.
 
4,000 Assist Club
Senior setter Julie Shives is now a member of the 4,000 assist club at Southeast Missouri. Shives ranks fifth on the career assists list with 4,038. In order to move up in the rankings, Shives needs to tally almost 1,000 more assists to reach Southeast Hall of Famer Tuba Meto's 5,003 assists mark, who ranks fourth all-time.
