CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri (6-4) volleyball team defeated the Kangaroos of UMKC (6-6) Wednesday evening in a close 5-set match, 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-9).

"I am very proud of the way we fought tonight in a close five-set match," said head coach Julie Yankus. "UMKC is a very good team who has beaten two other Ohio Valley Conference teams this season; hopefully that shows us where we fall in the conference. They have a lot of weapons and that's hard to respond to, but we did. We did well blocking and getting in a system. Coon and Yarber had awesome nights and helped up seal the deal."

The Redhawks rolled in the first set, winning 25-22. Emily Coon led the way in the set with five kills and three blocks for the Redhawks.

Southeast fell behind in the second set, sometimes behind nine points at a time. Southeast made seven errors in the set, helping UMKC to take the set, 25-19, and allowing the Roos to tie up the match going into the intermission. Despite putting only 19 points on the board, Southeast managed 14 kills, six of which came from Colleen Yarber.

The Redhawks came out looking for revenge in the third set, and they got it. Coon once again led the Redhawks with seven kills. Southeast took a 2-1 lead in the match with the 25-20 set win.

The tables turned once again in the fourth set with UMKC barely taking the set 25-23, forcing a decisive fifth set.

Southeast came out blazing in the final set, going up 13-5. UMKC made a late run for the match but came up short in the end as the Redhawks held on for a 15-9 set win and 3-2 match win.

Yarber tied a season-high 20 kills in the match with Coon posting the same amount with a .515 hitting percentage. Julie Shives had a career-high 60 assists. Berkley Idel came up one dig short of tying a career-high with 28. As a team, Southeast had 12 blocks and hit .260 in the five-set match.

Southeast Missouri will travel to Columbia, Mo. for their final preseason tournament of the 2013 season Friday hosted by Missouri.
