DES MOINES, Iowa – It took nearly 85 minutes, but the Southeast Missouri soccer team broke out of its scoring slump in dramatic fashion en route to a 2-1 overtime win at Drake on Sunday.
Natasha Minor's goal in the 85th minute tied the score with the Bulldogs (0-6-2) and
Erin Shulman found the back of the net with 17 seconds left in overtime to give the Redhawks (1-4-1) the comeback win.
"We showed a lot of character today," Southeast head coach
Heather Nelson said. "We had a tough game against a good team on Friday. To come out two days later and come from behind on the road the way we did took a lot of character and mental toughness. I thought we played our best soccer after they scored on us. We took better care of the ball. The longer the game went on, the more I felt we controlled play."
DU outshot Southeast 12-5 in the first half of play, including 8-0 in the first 22:12 of the contest. The Bulldogs got on the board in the 21st minute when Brittany Schuling bended a corner kick into the net for her first goal of the year.
The Redhawks established themselves as the half wore on, outshooting the Bulldogs 5-4 over the last 22:48. DU keeper Andrea Swanson was sharp, however, stopping two shots to keep Southeast behind at the half.
Drake opened the second half with a barrage of shots, attempting four in the first 3:39.
Lauren Meyer kept the Bulldogs at a single tally, stopping all eight shots that she faced in the second half to give the Redhawks a chance.
Southeast took advantage of the opportunity the freshman keeper afforded it with 5:20 left in regulation when Minor worked around some defenders and blasted a shot to the back of the net from the top of the box. Shulman earned an assist on the tying goal, which was the Redhawks' first since Minor scored 8:01 into its Aug. 25 match at UMKC, a span of 456:39. More importantly, it sent the contest to overtime tied at 1-1.
"That was a huge goal by Tash," Nelson said. "She showed good skill moving around a couple players to create her own shooting angle and hit her shot."
Both teams attempted two shots in the extra period and it appeared that one overtime wasn't going to be enough to decide things. The Redhawks decided one more period was enough as Minor sprung Shulman behind the Bulldogs' defense in the final minute of OT. Shulman worked her way around the keeper and scored with a soft touch for her first tally of the year to give Southeast the win.
"Tash played a good ball to Erin," Nelson said. "It was similar to a chance she had against Arkansas State last week. She wasn't at a great angle by the time she reached the keeper, but she did a great job controlling her body and showed good touch with a confident finish."
DU outshot Southeast 24-14 overall, though the margin was only 12-9 after halftime. Both teams attempted five corner kicks.
Ashton Aubuchon made her sixth-straight start for Southeast and stopped five first-half shots. Freshman
Lauren Meyer, who relieved Aubuchon in the second half, made nine saves and picked up her first-career win. DU goalkeeper Andrea Swanson played every second of the contest and stopped four of six shots.
The Redhawks are off until Sept. 27 when they open up Ohio Valley Conference play at Murray State. Southeast does, however, host its 15th annual alumnae match on at Houck Stadium on Friday, where it will retire the late
Meg Herndon's No. 2 jersey.
