NORMAL, Ill. – Rachel Tejada scored a hat trick to send the Southeast Missouri soccer team to a 4-0 loss at two-time defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Illinois State on Friday.
Southeast remains winless on the season at 0-4-1 while ISU moves to 3-4 overall.
"We played an excellent team today," Southeast head coach Heather Nelson said. "Illinois State has won two-straight conference titles for a reason and they made us pay for our mistakes. I set a challenging schedule for our young team and we are gaining valuable experience against a number of quality opponents.
"Our team is working extremely hard from week to week and we're focused on growing as quickly as possible to be ready for (Ohio Valley Conference) play. We are disappointed in the result, but there were positive strides taken in today's performance."
The Redhawks recorded the first two shots of the afternoon as Breana Beine and Natasha Minor had attempts in the third and ninth minutes, respectively. Both attempts were turned away by Redbirds' keeper Aryn Newsom.
ISU picked things up the rest of the first half, outshooting Southeast 9-0 over the final 36 minutes of the opening frame. Tejada put the Redbirds on the board in the 23rd minute to make it 1-0. The Redhawks' deficit remained a single goal until Ali Farkos converted a feed from Hannah Leinert in the 38th minute to make it a 2-0 contest. Tejada notched her second of the afternoon with 2:19 left in the half to send Southeast to halftime with a 3-0 deficit.
The Redbirds capped the scoring with Tejada's third marker of the day in the 57th minute, the only goal of the second half.
ISU outshot Southeast 19-5 on the afternoon and also attempted five corner kicks. The Redbirds' defense held the Redhawks without a corner attempt.
Ashton Aubuchon started her fifth-straight match for Southeast, making six saves on the 10 shots ISU put on goal. Lauren Meyer closed out the final 23:52 and made one save for the Redhawks. Newsom finished with two saves to pick up the solo shutout for ISU.
The Redhawks continue their trip through the MVC on Sunday, when they face Drake in Des Moines, Iowa at 1 p.m.
