CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – After a week of practice, three Southeast Missouri track and field standouts are days away from competing against the best athletes in the country.
The Redhawks' trio of Kevin Farley, Blake Carter and Reggie Miller head to Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., for the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The four-day meet runs Wednesday through Saturday.
Farley gets Southeast's schedule started in the shot put on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time (7:30 Central Time). The OVC Male Field Co-Athlete of the Year and OVC Male Athlete of the Championship had a tremendous outdoor season, breaking the school record in the shot put twice.
Farley's most recent record performance was a mark of 60-8 1/2 at the NCAA West Region Prelims two weeks ago. That throw was good for eighth place in the regional meet. His record throw has him seeded 13th at this week's national meet.
Carter represents the Redhawks in the long jump on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. PT (6:30 CT). He has set outdoor career-bests in each of his last two meets, albeit with both marks being wind aided. He claimed the long jump at the OVC Outdoor Championships by clearing 25-0 3/4. Three weeks later, Carter bested that attempt with a leap of 25-4 at the NCAA West Region Prelims, placing him seventh and sending him to nationals.
The O'Fallon, Mo., native also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2013, earning second-team All-America honors after taking 13th in the long jump (24-5 1/2). Carter is seeded ninth in the 24-competitor field.
Miller finishes Southeast's week in the high jump on Friday at 3:20 p.m. PT (5:20 CT). The sophomore claimed his second-straight OVC title in the high jump last month, clearing a career-best 7-1. He tied for ninth in the event after reaching 6-11 1/2 at the NCAA West Region Prelims and is seeded 24th in the high jump at the national meet.?
Southeast has representation in three events at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, its most since 2006 when Miles Smith (400m), Alonzo Nelson (400m hurdles) and the 4x400m relay team that involved those two along with Walter Washington and Chris Poindexter.
Since moving to Division I prior to the 1992 outdoor season, four Redhawks have earned All-America honors. The last one to do so was three-time All-American Miles Smith, who took sixth in the 400m at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Live results and heat sheets are available throughout the meet on NCAA.com. The meet will also be streamed on ESPN3 and the Pac-12 Network live stream.
