EUGENE, Ore. – Southeast Missouri wasted little time making a mark at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Kevin Farley earned first-team All-America honors after placing seventh in the shot put with a school-record throw of 61-11 3/4.
Farley clinched his third-straight record-setting meet in the prelims. The sophomore's second throw of the night topped his mark of 60-8 1/2 from the West Region Prelims two weeks ago. After the first flight, the Springfield, Ill., native sat fourth in the standings. He entered the finals sixth before eventually settling at seventh overall.
That finish earns Southeast two points in the team standings, the Redhawks' first points at nationals since 2008.
“Kevin had a big time throw in the prelims,” Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. “He had been battling some soreness in his elbow, but really got into his second throw. I'm really proud of how he came out and competed at his first national meet today. It's huge for him to set the tone for us on the first day of the meet with the rest of our kids going later this week.”
Farley is the first Southeast athlete to earn All-America honors since Miles Smith took sixth in the 400m in 2008.
The NCAA meet continues on Thursday as Blake Carter represents Southeast in the long jump. Reggie Miller will also compete in the high jump on Friday.
