CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – With the NCAA West Region prelims in two weeks, several Southeast Missouri track and field competitors have one last shot to break into the field this weekend.
The Redhawks are sending athletes that are near the regional cutoff to the Louisville Twilight (Friday) and the Georgia Tech Invitational (Friday and Saturday).
This weekend's competition is a prelude to the NCAA West Region prelims that are held in Austin, Texas on May 23-25. That meet selects 48 individuals and 24 relay teams to compete in the meet, which is itself a qualifying meet to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in early June.
Making the trek to Georgia Tech are throwers Kevin Farley, Craig Robinson, Courtney Gapelu, Sarah Hall and Kayla Gutierrez. The group is also joined by jumper Blake Carter and the 4x100m relay team of Carter, Kendrick Farr, Blake Smith and Alexander Anderson.
Farley and Robinson will throw the shot put, where they are both securely in the regional field with rankings of 25 (57-8 1/2) and 26 (57-5), respectively. Farley will also throw the discus (60th; 170-11) while Robinson will compete in the hammer throw (64th; 188-10) Gapelu is also a likely qualifier on the women's side, where she sits 34th in the shot put with an outdoor school-record throw of 51-3. Hall will also throw the shot put, trying to improve her No. 84 regional ranking (47-2 1/4). Gutierrez will compete in the hammer throw (83rd; 174-11).
Carter owns the top regional rank of any Redhawk, sitting 10th in the long jump after winning the event at the OVC Outdoor Championships with an outdoor-best leap of 25-0 3/4. Carter is also a member of the Redhawks' 71st-ranked 4x100m relay team, which owns a season-best time of 40.97 that was set at the Sea Ray Relays in early April.
Southeast's representatives at the Louisville Twilight include distance runners Rebekah Lawson, Maria Trowbridge, Mary Dohogne and Gloria Westlake, senior sprinter Jerika Lewis, pole vaulters Jill Schnurbusch and Nikki Buchheit, javelin throwers Brian Grote and Joel Krause and hammer thrower Jared Siemers.
Lawson is running the 5000m, where she owns a season-best of 16:54.85 while Trowbridge (11:14.81), Westlake (11:20.86) and Dohogne (11:21.46) are slated to run the 3000m steeplechase. Lewis ranks 65th regionally in the 200m (23.97) and 91st in the 400m (55.36). Schnurbusch appears locked into the regional meet with her season-best vault of 12-11 1/2, which ranks 34th, while Buchheit set a season-high with a height of 11-11 3/4 at last week's OVC Championships.
Siemers is coming off an individual OVC title after tossing a career-best 189-2 in the hammer throw last weekend. That throw is 61st in the region. Meanwhile, Grote ranks 66th in the javelin with a throw of 199-7 while Krause took third at the OVC Outdoor Championships with a career-best 179-9.
