Redhawk Rally Falls Short in 4-1 Loss

Southeast Missouri had bases loaded in the seventh but failed to narrow the Lady Gov lead.

Xia Wilson finished the series batting 6-for-10 against the Lady Govs.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay (18-24, 9-15 OVC) earned the series sweep over Southeast Missouri (15-30, 6-16 OVC) Sunday with a 4-1 win. The Redhawks had bases loaded with one out in the seventh but the late-inning rally fell short in the series finale. 

Austin Peay took an early lead in the bottom half of the first on a Laurel Burroughs solo home run. 

With Kaitlin Zink on second, Leah Becker found the middle to bring Zink around and tie up the game. 

Both teams found themselves in a pitcher's duel till the Austin Peay half of the sixth when three runs crossed the plate. With the lead-off batter on second, Lauren de Castro  singled to right, driving in the go-ahead run. With bases loaded and two out, Renee Terry made an impressive catch in left field but it was enough to score a run on the sacrifice fly. Courtney Brower hit a blooper to the second baseman, scoring a run from second, 4-1 Lady Govs. 

Xia Wilson doubled to left center to lead-off the seventh inning followed by a single by Lindsey Patterson to get two runners on for the Redhawks. Simone Patterson took a bruise to load the bases with one out. The late-inning Redhawk rally fell short on a game-ending double play. 

Wilson led the offense with two hits. Wilson finished the series 6-for-10. Becker was 1-for-2 with the only Redhawk RBI. Alexis Anderson snapped a 10-game hitting streak after going 0-for-2 after being hit by a pitch and a walk.  

Burroughs and de Castro each had two hits with an RBI against Southeast. 

Hannah Clemons (4-7) suffered the loss after allowing the go-ahead run to reach base. Clemons gave up two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings. Reliever Taylor Cowan gave up two runs on two hits. 

De Castro (9-11) recorded the complete game win. De Castro gave up one run on six hits to the Redhawks as well as walked five batters, only striking out two. 

The Redhawks welcome regional rival Saint Louis Wednesday for a single game at 5 p.m. The Redhawks will close the season next weekend at home against UT Martin. Sunday, the team will celebrate five seniors during senior day festivities.
