Lady Govs Sweep Redhawks in Sunday’s Doubleheader, 6-0, 6-5

Southeast Missouri dropped a doubleheader to Austin Peay Sunday.

Xia Wilson and Alexis Anderson each went 4-for-7 against Austin Peay Sunday.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Lady Govs of Austin Peay (17-24, 8-15 OVC) swept a doubleheader Sunday against Southeast Missouri (15-29, 6-15 OVC); shutting out the Redhawks in game one, 6-0, and coming back to win game two, 6-5.

The Lady Gov bats wasted no time as the first four batters of the game all came around to score very early in the game. With runners on first and second, Lauren de Castro put one in the right-center gap, plating both runners. Mel Pavel immediately followed up with a big home run to left, 4-0 APSU after one inning. 

Both teams put zeros on the scoreboard till the APSU half of the sixth. With runners on first and third, Austin Peay extended the lead in the sixth inning when they executed a double steal. With a runner on third, Laurel Burroughs hit a ball to Kaitlin ZnIk playing deep in the six-hole to plate one more. 6-0 Lady Govs at the end of six innings. 

The Lady Govs held the Redhawks to three hits in the contest. Xia Wilson recorded two of the three hits while Alexis Anderson had the other. 

Courtney Brower and Burroughs led the offense for APSU with two hits each. De Castro and Pavel each had a hit with two RBI in the contest.

After giving up four runs in the first, Taylor Cowan (7-20) suffered the loss without recording an out. Hannah Clemons pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out four Lady Gov batters. 

De Castro (8-11) got the win for APSU, pitching a complete game shutout, giving up only three hits and striking five batters out. 

Austin Peay 6, Southeast Missouri 5

The Redhawks took their first lead of the day in the second inning. Simone Patterson reached on a lead-off base hit. With runners on second and third, Leah Becker hit an RBI single to the short stop; 1-0 Redhawks.

The Lady Govs were quick to get that run back and then some in the bottom of the inning. With two runners on, Marissa Lake put a ball in the left-center gap to score two. Kayla Davidson stepped up to the plate and hit a huge home run over the scoreboard in left field to go up 4-1 on Southeast. 

The Redhawks matched the Lady Govs' four-run frame in the top of the third. After a pair of base hits from Anderson and Wilson, Cowan threaded a ball up the middle to plate both runners. S. Patterson stepped in and hit her eighth home run of the season to retake the lead 5-4. 

The lead changed again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lake hit her second RBI double of the contest, tying the game. Davidson drove in the go-ahead run on a single; 6-5 Lady Govs after four innings. 

The Lady Govs were able to hold on to the lead to earn the doubleheader sweep over Southeast. 

The Redhawks outhit the Lady Govs 10-7 in game two. 

Anderson posted a 3-for-4 game, finishing 4-for-7 on the day. Wilson had two hits, also finishing 4-for-7 against the Lady Govs. S. Patterson had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored in game two. 

Davidson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while Lake went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. 

Cowan suffered the complete game loss giving up six runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits. 

Morgan Brewer (7-10) recorded the win. Brewer threw a complete game, giving up four earned runs on ten hits. 

The Redhawks and Lady Govs will face-off again in the series finale Monday at noon.
