CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - A short-handed Southeast Missouri (2-8, 0-6) women's tennis team fell to UT Martin (3-10, 2-1) by a score of 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.

Southeast played with only five players due to injuries, the latest including a season-ending stress fracture for Nikole Novikova. Novikova had four singles victories at the No. 3 spot prior to her injury. The Redhawks were also without Melissa Martin.

Despite the fact Southeast was forced to surrender the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches, the Redhawks were competitive against the Skyhawks who were picked second in this year's Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll.

The top half of the singles lineup was strongest for Southeast as Elizabeth Nyenwe defeated Anna Marie Herbold in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5, at the No. 2 position and Jessica Courtnell followed with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Anna Winkelmann at No. 3.

Heather Robinson (No. 1) fell to Ivon Simic, 6-0, 6-1, Sarah Uptmor (No. 4) lost to Johanie Van Zyl, 6-2, 6-0, Lauren Schaper (No. 5) dropped a 6-0, 6-0, decision to Jessica Silva and Katie McCall (No. 6) won by default in the other four singles bouts.

Southeast led at times during its doubles matches, but lost by close scores. Simic and Herbold slipped past Robinson and Courtnell, 8-6, at No. 1, while Van Zyl and McCall edged Nyenwe and Schaper, 9-8, at No. 2.

The Redhawks will conclude their busy week with three road matches. Southeast travels to Brescia College Friday, Eastern Kentucky Saturday and Morehead State Sunday.
