EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Southeast Missouri (4-10) fell to Bowling Green State (7-5) Saturday morning in its first game of the Evansville Tournament, 4-1. The Redhawks were then shoutout by Evansville (3-9), 8-0, in five innings.
Head coach Lana Richmond had this to say: “It was a disappointing day as our offense was quiet throughout the two games. We were in the game defensively in game one coming up with key double plays but made critical defensive mistakes in game two.”
Bowling Green State 4, Southeast Missouri 1
Redhawks got on the board in their half of the first. Simone Patterson hit her third double of the season and advanced to third on a ground-out. Taylor Cowan threaded a single through the right side to plate S. Patterson and take a 1-0 lead.
Bowling Green manufactured four runs on five hits in the top of the second. Cowan found herself in a bases-loaded jam after giving up three consecutive singles to begin the inning. With no out, Emily McClelland hit an RBI single to put the Falcons on the board and tie the game. Cowan made an excellent fielding play when she caught a line drive right back to her and threw to first base to nab the runner, fielding the team's fifth double play of the year. The Falcons drew a bases-loaded walk followed by a 2-RBI single to go up 4-1 on Southeast.
In the top of the third, Southeast turned their second double play of the game, sixth of the season, when Bowling Green grounded into a 1-6-3 double play.
From the second inning to the end of the game, the score stood at 1-4.
Cowan recorded six assists in the game, tying an individual single-game high this season set by Elysia Mesa on Feb. 23 against Nicholls; the most for a pitcher this season.
Southeast was out-hit by Bowling Green 4-6.
Chelsea Smith was perfect going 2-for-2. S. Patterson and Cowan recorded the other two Redhawk hits in the contest.
Katie Yoho went 2-for-4, batting two runs in for the Falcons.
Cowan (2-5) pitched her fifth complete game of the 2013 season; going 7.0 innings, striking out five batters and walking four.
Paris Imholz (5-1) recorded the complete game victory for Bowling Green.

Evansville opened up a big lead in the first inning and never looked back as they continued to add runs to the board while continually shutting down the Redhawk offense.
The Purple Aces scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly followed by a three-run home run by Kendall Kautz to open up an 0-4 lead early in the contest.
Evansville added a run in the second on a successful double steal; another in the third on an RBI single; and two in the fourth on an RBI double followed by a sacrifice fly to centerfield, leading 0-8 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Down by eight runs, Southeast tried to piece together a comeback effort but fell short. Savannah Carpenter lead-off the inning with a single to left field. Alexis Anderson reached on a single up the middle; runners on first and second, one out. Renee Terry pinch hit and slapped bunted for a hit to load the bases. Taylor Perry sat the next two batters down to secure the shutout of Southeast.
The Redhawks recorded only three hits in the contest, all of which came in the final inning. Southeast was out-hit 3-8. Carpenter, Anderson, and Terry recorded the three hits for the Redhawks.
Alicia Betancur was 2-for-2 this afternoon with a run scored.
Three Redhawk pitchers appeared in the loss to Evansville. Hannah Clemons (1-3) suffered the loss giving up six runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work. Lindsey Patterson pitched 1.0 innings in relief giving up two runs. Lauren Reinagel pitched 0.1, retiring the final Purple Ace batter Southeast faced.
Perry (1-0) recorded her first win this season in the complete game shutout.
“We look forward to getting back on the field to put the three components of hitting, pitching, and fielding together consistently,” added Richmond.
Southeast Missouri plays Bowling Green and Evansville again tomorrow, Sunday, March 10, beginning at noon.
