SIUE 9, Southeast Missouri 1 (six innings) Box Score
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri (10-18, 3-5 OVC) softball team fell to SIU Edwardsville (22-8, 7-2 OVC) Saturday, 9-1 in six innings. After dropping both ends of the doubleheader Saturday, the Redhawks were swept in the three-game series.
The Cougars struck in the first, scoring on a failed attempt to get the lead runner out at home.
SIUE tacked on another three runs in the second. With runners on first and second, Samantha Stanicek singled down the right field line to score Brittany Toney, followed by another RBI fielder's choice. SIUE scored again on a close play by Kaitlin Zink, just narrowly missing the runner at first, 4-0 Cougars after two innings.
The Redhawks were able to get on the board in the bottom of the second that started with three straight singles from Taylor Cowan, Xia Wilson and Simone Patterson to load the bases. Brittany Smith was able to reach on a dropped fly ball by the center fielder, scoring Cowan, 4-1 Cougars.
Southeast held the Cougars to four runs through the fifth inning but a big sixth inning propelled the Cougars to the third run-shortened game of the weekend. With runners on first and second, one out, Taylor Tooley singled to left, driving in Jordan LaFave. Rachel Coonrod threaded another single up the middle scoring two more. Pinch hitter CC Hutchinson put another single up the middle, scoring Alex McDavid. With bases loaded, Stanicek drew a walk to go up 9-1 on Southeast.
The Redhawks were unable to score in the bottom of the inning to extend to the game to the seventh.
SIUE outhit Southeast 9-7 in the contest. Seven different Redhawk batters recorded hits against the Cougars.
Chelsea Yankolovich and Tooley each had two hits. Tooley, Coonrod, and Stanicek all had two RBI.
Starter Taylor Cowan (6-11) suffered the loss giving up eight runs through 5.2 innings of work in the circle.
Haley Chambers (12-2) earned the complete game victory, giving up one unearned run, striking out seven Redhawks, and walking only one.
Southeast softball concludes the home stand Tuesday at 4 p.m. with a rematch against the Evansville Purple Aces.
