Cougars Shut Down Redhawks in Doubleheader, 13-0, 11-1

The SIUE Cougars defeated the Redhawks in both games of Friday’s doubleheader, 13-0, 11-1.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri (10-17, 3-4 OVC) softball team dropped two games of a doubleheader to Ohio Valley Conference foe SIU Edwardsville (21-8, 6-2 OVC) Friday, 13-0, 11-1. The Cougars run-ruled the Redhawks in both games: game one going five innings and game two going six. 

SIUE 13, Southeast Missouri 0 (five innings)

Two grand slams in the game propelled SIUE past Southeast. 

The Cougars jumped out in front, 1-0, in the second inning with a lead-off home run off the scoreboard by Brittany Toney. 

A big fourth inning for the Cougars started with Toney's second lead-off home run of the game. With two runners on, Chelsea Yankolovich singled through the right side to plate another run. With bases loaded, Taylor Tooley stepped into the box and blasted a grand slam to left-center, 7-0 SIUE.

Another six-run fifth inning began with a bases-loaded walk followed by an RBI single from Toney. With bases still loaded, Kayla Riggs hit the Cougar's second grand slam of the day to put SIUE up 13-0. 

SIUE outhit Southeast 15-3. 

Lindsey Patterson went 2-for-2 in the contest with Simone Patterson adding a hit of her own. 

Toney was perfect in the contest, 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Tooley and Riggs each had four RBI. 

After pitching 3.1 innings, Taylor Cowan (6-10) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs on nine hits. 

Haley Chambers (11-2) recorded the complete game shutout for SIUE. 

SIUE 11, Southeast Missouri 1 (six innings)

The Redhawks fell behind early when OVC Player of the Week Alex McDavid hit an RBI single up the middle followed by Toney recording her fourth RBI of the day with a double to score another, 2-0 Cougars after the top of the first. 

The Redhawks scored their first run of the day in the second that started with a two-out double from Brittany Smith who scored on a single from Chelsea Smith, 2-1 SIUE. 

The Redhawks held SIUE to two runs through the fifth inning but the Cougar bats got hot in the sixth inning as they scored nine runs in the inning. The scoring started with an RBI double from Toney followed by an RBI single from Jordan LaFave. The Cougars followed up with three 2-RBI hits. The scoring ended on an error that scored the ninth run of the inning, eleventh of the game. 

SIUE just nearly outhit Southeast in game two 10-9. 

Alexis Anderson and C. Smith each recorded two hits with additional hits coming from Kaitlin Zink, Xia Wilson, Leah Becker, S. Patterson, and B. Smith. 

McDavid went 3-for-4 in the contest with three RBI. Toney finished the day 6-for-6 with five RBI with four runs scored. 

Taylor Cowan suffered her second loss of the day after giving up two runs in two innings of work. 

Erin Greenbelt (7-3) earned the complete game victory giving up one run to the Redhawks. 

The series finale will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Southeast Softball Complex.
