CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri track and field program looks to build on an already impressive start to its outdoor season this weekend.
The Redhawks will send several competitors to the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational, which runs Friday and Saturday at the University of Cincinnati. Friday's action begins with the combined events at 11:30 a.m., with the hammer throw and 10,000m both being run on opening day.
Combined events resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday, while the javelin is the first solo event of the final day and begins at 10 a.m.
Southeast competed at the Cougar Classic, hosted by fellow Ohio Valley Conference school SIU Edwardsville. The men won the scored tri-meet, which also featured Illinois State, while the women took second. The two teams combined for 11 first-place finishes at the meet.
The Redhawks are well represented on the OVC's performance list through two meets. Seven competitors are leading the conference in their events. Craig Robinson is at the top of the OVC in both the shot put (season-best 55-9 3/4) and hammer throw (188-10), Kevin Farley paces the league in the discus (170-11) and was just named OVC Male Field Athlete of the Week while Brian Grote tops all javelin throwers (178-4).
On the women's side, Jill Schnurbusch is leading all conference competitors in the pole vault (11-11 3/4), Courtney Gapelu is the top shot put thrower (50-4 3/4) and Sarah Hall is the early-season leader in the discus (139-0).
Southeast also has several student-athletes in good position in the NCAA West Region. Forty-eight individual competitors qualify for the NCAA West Region preliminary meet in May and the Redhawks currently hold 10 total spots in the top 48 of the regional rankings. Farley is ranked in three events, sitting 20th in shot put, 33rd in the discus and 44th in the hammer throw. Robinson has his name in the rankings twice, sitting 18th in the shot put and 32nd in the hammer throw. Kendrick Farr is 41st in the 100m after crossing the line in 10.72
For the women, Gapelu is 13th in the shot put, Jessica Brown is 38th in the long jump (18-6 1/2), Kayla Guttierez is 46th in the hammer throw (174-11) and Hall ranks 47th in the shot put (46-2 3/4).
