St. Louis, Mo. – Every so often teams just run into nights where the ball doesn't find its way through the basket.
Tuesday night that happened to the Southeast Missouri State women's basketball team in a 52-34 loss at Saint Louis University.
The Redhawks fall to 3-8 while Saint Louis improves to 4-6.
Southeast won the opening tip and took an early 2-0 lead on a jump shot from
Olivia Hackmann.
Erin Nelson would hit two free throws and tack on a 3-point basket to build a 5-2 lead. Desirae Ball added a trey of her own to make it an 8-0 run for SLU.
Patricia Mack swished a 3-point basket from the top of the key to briefly stop the Billikens run.
After Mack's basket, the rim appeared to have a top on it, as the Redhawks were unable to get anything to fall besides four free throws. Saint Louis closed the first half on a 24-4 run to enter the intermission with a 34-9 lead.
"I really give Saint Louis a lot of credit," Southeast head coach
Ty Margenthaler said. "They were really aggressive in the first half."
Down 43-16 with 13:13 remaining in the game, Southeast embarked on a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to 16 points with 4:50 remaining.
Junior
Allyson Bradshaw hit back-to-back 3-point buckets to pass Yashika Sidbury and move into sixth place all time with 94 made 3-point field goals.
Jordan Hunter,
Kara Wright and Hackmann each scored during the 13-3 run as well.
"I was really happy that they came out in the second half and challenged them defensively," Margenthaler said. "We shot better and beat them point-wise in the second half."
Southeast outscored the Billikens 25-18 in the second stanza while holding SLU to 16 points below its average of 68.6 points per game.
Bradshaw, Hackmann and Mack each scored seven points to lead Southeast while Desirae Ball scored a game-high 15 points for SLU. She was the only player to score double-digits a night that both teams combined to shoot 26.6 percent from the floor.
The Redhawks saw the return of
Yelena Rosado, who missed the last six games due to injury. Rosado went 1-for-2 from the floor with three points in 16 minutes.
The Redhawks return to the Show Me Center Thursday night hosting the University of Illinois-Springfield. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
