CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri volleyball begins their final home stand of the 2013 season Friday against Murray State at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening's match can be seen for free on the OVC Digital Network. Southeast welcomes the Lady Govs of Austin Peay Saturday at 5:00 p.m. The Redhawks will honor four seniors prior to Saturday's match.
Let's Review
Southeast Missouri fell to Missouri State before splitting a pair of OVC matches over the weekend. The Redhawks defeated SIUE and fell to Eastern Illinois. Senior
Colleen Yarber led the team with 41 kills while recording a .212 attack percentage. She added five service aces. Yarber recorded a double-double against SIUE with 18 kills and 25 digs. She finished the week with 43 digs.
A Look Ahead
As the final week of the 2013 season begins, the Redhawks will close the home schedule against UT Martin Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The regular season will come to a close Saturday as Southeast hits to road to Cookeville, Tenn. to go head-to-head with the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.
Thank You Seniors
Southeast Missouri will honor four seniors prior to Saturday's match. These four seniors include
Emily Coon,
Berkley Idel,
Julie Shives, and
Colleen Yarber. All four ladies have had exceptional careers while at Southeast with all cracking career top-ten lists in various categories.
Scouting Trip
Murray State fell to Tennessee State and Belmont last week. Freshman Scottie Ingram recorded 22 kills and a .321 hitting percentage to go with three assists last week. Freshman Ellie Lorenz, filling in as the starting libero, picked up 25 digs in seven sets. She led the Racers with 14 digs versus Belmont. Sophomore Sam Bedard dished out 62 assists over the two matches. Against the Bruins, she had 32 assists, six kills and seven digs.
Austin Peay defeated Tennessee State and fell to Belmont last week. Senior Lauren Henderson recorded her third straight seven-block effort against Tennessee State. She leads the league with 58 blocks in OVC play this season. Junior Jada Stotts recorded 12 kills in both the Lady Govs matches last week. She posted a .219 hitting percentage to go with two assists and three blocks.
Playing a Wall
Southeast Missouri has consistently led the OVC in blocks this season. Southeast has tallied 273 blocks (114 solo, 318 assisted), 2.42 blocks/set.
Taylor Masterson (1.08 blocks/set) ranks second in the OVC in blocking with
Emily Coon (0.92 blocks/set) ranks 6th in blocking in the OVC.
1,000 Kill Club
Senior middle blocker
Emily Coon recorded her 1,000th kill of her career in Oct. 16's match against Saint Louis. Coon currently sits outside the top-ten in career kills. In order to break the top-ten, she must record 196 more kills this season.
Colleen Yarber is approaching the 1,000 kills mark and only 38 more to join Coon in the club.
Records Watch
Berkley Idel has broken the top ten list of career digs with 1,436 while
Colleen Yarber has broken the top-ten in career attack attempts with 3,407 and now ranks seventh all-time. Meanwhile,
Emily Coon is climbing the Assisted Blocks and Total Blocks list.
Not a Queen, but an Ace
Freshman defensive specialist
Jade Mortimer ranks among the most aggressive servers in the conference with 29 service aces. Her 0.30 aces/set ranks her 8th in the OVC. Southeast tied a season-high 10 aces in the match against Saint Louis as both teams combined for 19 aces altogether.
There's No Place like Home
Julie Yankus, now in her third season at the helm of the Redhawks, has garnered an 18-6 record at the friendly confines of Houck Field House. In home openers, she is 3-0 and 16-5 in OVC matches at home.
